February 17, 20196 yr comment_568553 Isn't that dangerous on the old wiring in our Z's? Just curious. . A 1,000,000 amp alternator is fine in our cars. The car only draws what the device needs. Having more available amps allows you to run a stereo, fog lamps, radar detector, cell phone charger etc etc. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58542-home-built-z-full-video-build/?&page=44#findComment-568553 Share on other sites

I think that the GM alternators are typically run as "one wire" systems. The S(ense) wire is just shorted to the B(attery) wire. Edit - and the L(amp) wire. All one wire. So the alternator will produce current. Other wires run through the VR. Haven't really followed them out. Best beware. February 17, 20196 yr comment_568557 The GM SI alternators can be wired as one wire or three. The plug is there on all of them. Your choice. The adapter makes the wires at the alternator correct. So you'd just need to get those right for the plug at the GM SI. Some of the other high output alternators, like ZSpecialties' 140 amp unit, are "one-wire". February 17, 20196 yr comment_568585 Amps are drawn, not pushed. The device uses the amount of energy it is designed for. The gauge of wire is designed for the amount of current being drawn by that circuit. All those amps just sit idle until drawn by a device. Think of it as having a reservoir of power available for more devices than was originally designed for the car. Thanks. As you can tell I usually stay away from "electrical"..... Afraid of it. February 17, 20196 yr comment_568620 Another way to look at it is to liken it to a water hose: amperage is the diameter of the hose, whereas voltage is the pressure. You can't have a hose too big, but if you have too much pressure it can break the system. February 20, 20196 yr comment_568922 I've been on my car for 5 years now and I still remember/find little things to correct, sometimes 2 or three times but the benefit is that by the third time I'm pretty good at it ?.
