Just watch craigslist like a hawk. I found my 280z for 1800. It an automatic and is need of the normal interior repair and has a single stage repaint paint job(original color was light blue). Frame 100% solid not even a spec of rust on the frame. Battery tray area did rust out a bit however. Outside of that no rust just some normal door dings and stuff like that. Car wasn't running 100% when I got it. It started and idled okay, but if you tried to drive it, it would die turns out needed new AFM as someone had opened up the original one and probably messed with it.  The previous owner told me he wanted 1900 and would not take a penny less and if i tried to offer him any less he would walk away.  Car was 4 hours away rented a trailer and told the guy I had his money and 1900 as asked he said I should have haggled a little bit felt bad and gave me $100 back lol. I already felt like I was getting it for a killer deal no idea why he wanted to sell the car for so little. Still needs lots of renovation and work but its a great car to restore from. They are around just have to watch Craigslist and wait for the right chance.

Like the others have said, there is no point buying a shell and hoping to make it roadworthy. You can set a max budget but remember the seller sets the price. I have expressed this to others hoping to buy one of these cars for dirt cheap expecting to turn a sows ear into a silk purse. PROBABLY WON'T HAPPEN. You will probably give up on a shell before making it roadworthy. Here is a suggestion. Do an internet search in your state and surrounding states for. DATSUN SPECIALISTS. I found mine in the back lot of a specialist in Redondo Beach CA. The guy had it on a mechanics lien. But they usually keep cars around for extra hard to find parts. I was fortunate to find a complete car and maintaining it is an ongoing and truly rewarding task. If you buy a bucket of C..P, that is probably what you will end up with. If you are looking to spend about 5K you will probably have a good platform to work with. You never really "FINISH" working on a DATSUN because there is always a way to maker more of what you want. Good luck with your search. STAY AWAY FROM $300 CARS!...........of any type.
