October 6, 20177 yr comment_531760 I have heard that chalk works too to reduce pinning as well. ("Pinning" being the name of the clogging of the file teeth.) October 6, 20177 yr comment_531761 Question! Is this discussion about an aluminum file. Do they clog when used on aluminum?Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58637-balance-tube/?&page=2#findComment-531761 Share on other sites
October 6, 20177 yr comment_531762 The file is not aluminum. The file is hardened tool steel. The hardened tool steel file is being used to file an aluminum balance tube. Gummy cast aluminum can sometimes clog the file teeth and mess up the finish. October 6, 20177 yr comment_531764 Sorry poorly asked. Aren’t there files made specifically for aluminum?Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58637-balance-tube/?&page=2#findComment-531764 Share on other sites
October 6, 20177 yr comment_531766 Haha! I get it now. Sorry. I'm no file expert, but not that I've seen. I guess it's quite conceivable that certain file teeth shape would be less prone to pinning in certain materials, but I've not run across discussions about such features. Interesting idea. October 6, 20177 yr comment_531767 I recently spent time helping a friend in his Vintage repair shop. He had two sets one for aluminum and one for steel and very particular how they were used. Added notes: Found this:http://www.tooldex.com/cooper-hand-tools-nicholson-00024-type-a-flat-rectangular-machinists-aluminum-files.html? ___store=default&utm_source=GoogleShopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsNfOBRCWARIsAGITapbh4y_FcjQ_HnKZa_MatlU0ehSYcWvATTzy_Rm6qnLfZrosjqHaq1MaAiQwEALw_wcB Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58637-balance-tube/?&page=2#findComment-531767 Share on other sites
October 6, 20177 yr comment_531769 You're absolutely right. I just took a quick look at McMaster and they have files listed "for use on aluminum and other soft metals". I never got that specialized. I just reached in the drawer and grabbed the on that was the best shape and hoped it was sharp!!   Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58637-balance-tube/?&page=2#findComment-531769 Share on other sites

October 6, 20177 yr comment_531772 I'm assuming he used a general purpose file. Just like all the files in my drawer. BTW - Thanks for making me look into that. I learned something today. I'm still too cheap to buy material specific files, but it's nice to know they're out there!!  Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58637-balance-tube/?&page=2#findComment-531772 Share on other sites
