September 1, 20186 yr Author comment_556616 Progress on the head. You can see the line outside the bore diameter where the entire chamber will be opened up for the larger pistons too. He said it would be done in a week. Last two are the before and after. September 29, 20186 yr Author comment_558485 Stopped by my machinist. He is rolling now. Made a nifty tool to get the stock lifter shims out just to save himself $140 :rofl He machined the tool and put 2-2mm rare earth magnets in each hole. Look at how much bigger the new valve openings are. That's the stock RB26 valve in the photo after the tool. Dropped off some parts with the body guy too. He had done more than I expected. Shaved the antenna, rear side markers and replaced the bit of rust in the rear quarters with inner patch panels thus far. Epoxy was drying and then he will tackle the outer sheet metal. Soon he will drop the front and rear subframe and build a rolling cart for it so I can get some stuff powder coated. September 29, 20186 yr comment_558487 They won't tell you? That's pretty shitty. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58811-z31-na-rb-project/?&page=13#findComment-558487 Share on other sites
September 29, 20186 yr Author comment_558494 Sorry, I had copied and pasted the full response from another thread. But yeah, I want this low profile louver set for the Z31 and the guy who owns it won't respond to my inquiry about where it came from. I want to see the kevlar seats through the back glass anyway.. October 24, 20186 yr Author comment_560223 New final render as I decided to keep the rear 1/4 window trim. The render also shows the shortened rear facelift/kouki bumper and JDM side markers I just got from Japan. The body guy is almost done with the exterior work and will soon start cutting out engine bay sheet metal to replace with perfectly smooth sections. I want it to be as minimal as possible. The machinist is ready to make the custom piston molds and they should be ready this weekend. He will machine the top of a stock piston down below deck height at TDC and drill a hole all the way through to the bottom. He will then assemble the entire engine minus the valves. Nitto stroker forged crank, Nitto H beam rods, aftermarket "loose" tolerance main and rod bearings and the stock milled piston. Then the mold material will be poured in from the bottom through the drilled hole. A center punch will be used through the valve guides to get the valve center location once hardened. The kit came with a full spec sheet to add all the valve information including clearances while open/closed. The worksheet and piston mold will be sent to CP where they will 3D scan it to make custom CNC'd high compression pistons. The tuner is still saying that 12:1 should be ok on pump gas with a safe tune. I decided on the Haltech 2500 stand alone ECU and once the engine is in the car and I get the Injector dynamics 550's and the R35 GTR ignitor less coils, we can spec out the custom made harness from harness specialties. I also decided on the R34 GTR N1 oil pump with upgraded Spool gears. October 25, 20186 yr comment_560259 I like it with the window trim on the 1/4 windows. Compression seems really high, but what do I know. How does high compression with a moderate tune compare to a lower compression with a more radical tune as far as making power? October 25, 20186 yr Author comment_560289 I have to trust the tuner and the power numbers would probably be very similar. However, with higher compression I at least have the ability to run race gas or E85 if he decides to make a tune for that. He can even have a switchable dual tune for either. October 27, 20186 yr Author comment_560408 Machinist is currently working on the engine this eve and said the piston mold should be done tomorrow or Sunday. Stopped by the body shop to drop off some parts and took some photos of my own. It looks fantastic! The next updates should be good stuff! November 3, 20186 yr Author comment_560918 The car isn't primed yet. He was trying to wrap up another car that's just about done. I will have primed pics tomorrow. Fenders are rolled and pushed out 3mm for extra tire clearance all while keeping the flat edge! Piston mold is done and ready to send off to CP. He finished doing the port and polish on the intake manifold to match the head and over bored RB26 ITB's. Lastly, I got the N1 R34 GTR oil pump, Spool gears and the Haltech 2500 ECU. I also ordered Tomei adjustable cam gears. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/58811-z31-na-rb-project/?&page=13#findComment-560918 Share on other sites
November 11, 20186 yr Author comment_561383 CP Carrillo pistons have been ordered with expedited delivery. Custom 12:1 oversized 87mm pistons with WPC treatment which is interesting stuff. Micro particle high pressure shot peening. I am going to double check with CP this week on whether they want to do WPC on the full piston or a combo of WPC on the sidewalls/ceramic on top etc. The micro blasting greatly helps with oil retention and friction reduction but my main goal for the top/dome is to keep temperatures down to reduce the chance of detonation with 12:1 on pump gas. They are moving the wrist pin location slightly and these include the pins/rings. 2-3 weeks lead time on the pistons and the machinist is currently assembling the head. He removed some material for the larger cams to clearance and now just needs to finish assembling the valvetrain so we can determine what shims for the Tomei solid upgraded lifters. The engine should be together within the next 2 months! I found a company in Australia that built an amazing 400hp S30 with a built N/A RB30 running 14:1. They created a really nice throttle linkage setup and a guy who follows me on Instagram knows them personally and is trying to get me a deal on that so we don't have to try and reinvent the wheel. I can't use the stock setup because it mounts onto the intake plenum which will not be used. Not to mention the fact that the OE setup is bulky and not very pretty. The car has now been epoxy and fill primed. Next he will start shaving the engine bay then he will prime that, the jams, the cargo floor, modify the front and rear bumpers and then start shooting color!! November 17, 20186 yr Author comment_561752 Engine bay shaving well under way. 98% of all holes, all protruding sheet metal will be welded up and all of the brackets removed. Every electrical component for the engine will be relocated and displayed as a feature in the cargo bay.
