I'm not going to argue if diesel emissions are cancerogenic or not, and its not the test criteria, the test is opacity based, how much light is restricted by what comes out of the exhaust.

Back in the early 90's I had a smog license, my favorite activity (one of) was betting an ignorant fool that my 1980 Mercedes 300SD (diesel) had cleaner emissions then their Gas powered car,  so I would hook their car up, record the numbers then do mine....never lost a bet!, diesels due to the inherit design do not produce any HC or CO as gas cars (in numbers the smog machine could read), what is left behind is 1 Nox, 2 H2o, 3 "particulate matter," as is soot (that is what the opacity test measures), the soot is heavier then air and falls to the ground, it does not pollute the atmosphere. did you ever see the smog in the early 70's in the LA basin? (pics anyway) it was bad, you couldn't see the sky....and it had nothing to do with diesels as there weren't any around.

Apparently, the LA basin has been prone to bad air since the native americans owned it.  It's a big bowl full of dead air.

For the moment diesels are the best choice for most of the jobs they do. Can you imagine how much gasoline a freight train would burn or a semi, loaded with 40 tons or a combine. Until something better comes along it's what we got...they get cleaner every year

Talc causes cancer too but I still use it when I shoot pool. Lot's of products I cut up with a circular saw cause cancer too, and I cut them up and build houses with them because that's what the rules ordained by the government mandate. I prefer not to joist windmills, just trying to get by and provide for my family while I can. Just a little cog in this great big system!

That is true...the San Fernando Valley was known as "valley of fire" by the indians prior to the name change by the Spanish. why? every summer the whole place used to go up in flames every summer and the smoke would linger for weeks and month at a time..

Petroleum is what the system is based on currently. It was based on horses at one time and coal after that. As technology improves the system will change. Pretty much all of the promising technologies are not advanced enough yet to begin the transition. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and money for the infrastructure to change to a new form. There will also be unintended consequences of a new technology. There always are. There are also a lot of products that are made with petroleum distillates! Even if we didn't use it for fuel you are still going to need petroleum until alternatives are found. I believe stewardship of our environment is important, but unless we are going to live our lives and build our cars totally out of organics, petroleum is here for a while...

Oh well .....just mounted a new cheap muffler today until I get my system from Japan(Trust twin Pipes and twin Stack tips Exhaust System).

Surprisingly this ebay muffler sounds good.
