The pesky odometer

Hello all

This past Wednesday I noticed that my odometer had stopped working - both of them. If I remember correctly - and someone please advise if I'm wrong - but the trip odometer has to work for the actual odometer to work . So I reset the trip odometer and all was well (both were now working) until it reached 1.0. Odometer froze. Moved it a bit with the reset tab and it kept on, until, you guess it 2.0 where it froze again. Got home yesterday, pulled the speedo out, cleaned all the gears and lubricated everything but the numbers themselves on the trip odometer. Replaced everything - in the processes loosing the one tiny screw that holds the reset cable on. Drove it today and all was well until it reached 5.0, at which point it yet again froze. Reset it and it would go a few miles and then freeze again. Before I dismantle the speedo again and lubricate everything has anyone ever had this problem and how did you fix it?

you really dont want to lube some things like speedo parts. oil will attract dust and dirt and will eventually gum up. dry graphite powder would be a better choice, if it is really needed

I used dry graphite lubricant on everything. I just don't really know what to do. It keeps getting stuck and thus I don't know my miles - and I'm really anal about knowing how far my Z drives and such.

You got a chipped tooth on one of the gears, (that's why it stops at the same point)Plastic only lasts so long...

Keep messing with it if its fun (not) or just grab another speedo (much easier fix)

Embarrassing story but I'm up front to a fault.

Years ago I bought a ZX1100 for cheap. Rode it a year or so and decided to sale it to get my money back. Unhooked the cable at the front tire and chucked it up to a Dremel. Started clicking the miles off.  Put it on a higher speed then went upstairs to get a beer most likely,  came back and the gauge cluster was fogged over.  I ran the the Dremel too fast and it melted the odometer's plastic numbers.  Young and dumb but I ended up  buying a cluster off a wrecked bike with way less miles anyway.  Lesson learned,  don't run them back just buy a lower mileage gauge cluster.

The gears all looked to be all in order. I'm going to take it apart this week and take many pictures on the disassembly and reassembly.
