i'm going to need new struts soon. I've heard about Monroe quick struts. any feedback and do they make them for a 240. my machanic says the back ones need replacement, should I do all four while i'm at it. thankyou very much.

What a timely post, today I ordered KYB's, from Rock Auto, for my 72 along with all other suspension components needed for a full rebuild (except strut insulators which are coming from courtesy Nissan).  The cost for two KYB's is $78.77.  Front suspension first followed by rear a bit later.  Went with Moog brand when possible.

"Quick" struts probably just means self-contained, like the KYB's and others.  The factory strut tube damping parts are removed and everything is replaced with self-contained dampers.  Oil, valves, shafts, everything.

Not sure what your mechanic is talking about, with "special tools", unless he was planning to rebuild the factory internal dampers, which I'm not even sure can be done by today's mechanics.  Maybe you have an old-timer who knows how to do it.

There's no real benefit to doing all four versus at once versus just two, besides one shop visit versus two.  That was your question and the answer is "personal preference".

Maybe he's referring to the modern "struts" you can buy that are the housing/strut and shock cartridge (and often the spring as well) as a one piece bolt-in affair.

Didn't know it was a brand name too.  There's no Monroe on yours though.  He said Monroe quick struts.

 

No offense zhead, but after 1,17X posts struts should be a piece of cake.  You do need a spring compressor, for factory springs.

Seriously though, strut changes are pretty easy, with a few simple tricks, like unbolting the inner bolts of the control arms, for the 280Z.  The 280Z struts are longer than 240Z so the descriptions of just dropping the back struts out form under the fender wells don't work.  Unless you unbolt the inner attachment points.

easy to do, get a BFAW to remove the strut glan nuts. At least a 2 footer (it will be big since you have to open the jaws enough to hold on to that nut). look on youtube for some video. If you have not used spring compressor before, just make sure you are safe.
