BJ charges the seller 10% and the buyer 10%, a great arrangement for BJ!  I live down here and go every year, will be there today.

Does that get added to the bid price or does BJ just skim their 20% off the bid price?

My understanding is that the buyer pays bid price plus 10% and the seller recieves bid price less 8%. The bottom line BJ makes a lot of money.

It also makes sure they don't run cars that people aren't serious about selling...

Here's the Bidder info.  10% or 12%  http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Bidder/Home

Here's the Seller's (consignor's) 8% or 10% http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Media/Home/Reader/easy-steps-to-selling-your-collector-car/

plus fees for both.  Here's one -

It's an expensive adventure.

With this in mind, the seller of the '73 240Z that sold yesterday at Barrett-Jackson for $20,900.00 including buyer fees (pictured below) would have probably done better on Bring a Trailer or eBay, especially when you consider the seller fees BJ charges.  On the other hand, the seller of the '72 240Z was very fortunate to get the $37K less the fees. There's no way that the '72 Z would sell for $37K on eBay or BaT.

Maybe they subscribe to the belief that an oil-filled coil can have temp issues if it's mounted on its side and this was as close as they could get.

For example, from MSD/Mallory (although this particular one is a Bosch):
