Posted January 23, 20187 yr comment_540571 I need to replace my speedometer cable. Has anyone done it without removal of tachometer and dash cap? Because the speedo and tach come out the front of the dash I would have to remove the full face dash cap I have. I know its easier to get to the speedo with the tach out. I'm just wondering if I can access it by laying on my back, reaching up into the back of speedo to disconnect the cable without the removal of anything? January 23, 20187 yr comment_540575 It can be done, however you will have to remove the steering wheel, and the driver's seat, padd the floor, and be prepared to try and get your hand(s) up in there lying on your back while tearing flesh...ask me how I know. Your patience will be sorely tested and you will get cramps in your hands, wrists, arms , neck and back. You will have to do it by feel as it is almost impossible to see up there with your hands in the way. I found it was easier to remove the fasteners holding the dash and move it out a bit. You don't have to remove it all the way, but the extra room makes it a whole lot easier. I had to do it twice(!) when I installed my hvac system because it didn't connect correctly the first time. Good luck. January 24, 20187 yr Author comment_540618 The "top hat" gasket is defective. Leaking gear oil into the cable and then on the ground. Can't find a replacement for the top hat gasket. Just the o-ring and pinion seal. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/59415-speedo-cable/#findComment-540618 Share on other sites

I drove to Gulf shores and turned in a bid today, then drove back home. 10 hours! I'm working on my nerves now. I'll fall into the bed soon. January 24, 20187 yr Author comment_540671 Hey Cliff, I found the thread where you and I talked about the pinion seals and top hat gasket. Going to try and find time today to replace the o-ring, seal, and top hat. See where that gets me on the leak. Hopefully I can get the new top hat gasket on the end of the speedo cable without damaging it. I'll smear a little gear oil on it and hope for the best. January 24, 20187 yr Author comment_540685 Thanks Cliff. I was going to do the repair today and can't find my pinion seal and o-ring! Must have hid it from myself, been known to do that. I mean I've searched everywhere and twice. Oh well. I ordered them thru zcardepot again. I was really feeling motivated to do it today too.
