People get this wrong all the time. 43 and 35 years for somebody to have installed aftermarket, different, parts. Good luck. May 1, 20186 yr Author comment_548375 True. When I pull the old clutch setup I'll compare to the new one. That's for tomorrow. Looking at this car they may be original parts. At this point diff and trans are on the ground. Good time to stop. Thanks all for the help. May 1, 20186 yr comment_548382 Glad you are making good progress. Are you planning to do the rear main while you have the trans off? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/59810-5-speed-swap/?&page=5#findComment-548382 Share on other sites

May 1, 20186 yr Author comment_548384 Yep it's moving along. Will be glad once done. I bought a felpro rear main. It's going in tomorrow with the new clutch setup and flywheel. I'll snap some pics too. It's amazing how much gear oil and dirt is all over the trans and diff. May 1, 20186 yr comment_548385 while you have the flywheel out of the way for the rear main, take a look for signs of oil seepage from the rear bearing block side seals, now is the time to see if they are leaking. May 1, 20186 yr comment_548402 I'm sure you already know, but just to be safe, the Fel-Pro rear main requires a bit of oil on the outer rim before installation. May 1, 20186 yr comment_548403 A trick that@siteunseen taught me was to cover the input, output, gear selector areas with plumbing pipe end caps, clamped with hose style clamps. Then cover it with oven cleaner for an hour or so. Once its soaked in spray it down with high pressure water. It works great. You can then easily detail the remaining gunk with a wire brush. May 1, 20186 yr comment_548416 I used cheap Walmart oven cleaner on this one, then high pressure washer. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/59810-5-speed-swap/?&page=5#findComment-548416 Share on other sites
May 1, 20186 yr Author comment_548430 Looks good. Here is what the 4 speed looks like I removed. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/59810-5-speed-swap/?&page=5#findComment-548430 Share on other sites
May 1, 20186 yr Author comment_548431 @Dave WM see the 3 connectors I have on the side? The one missing the leads is for the backup lights. They broke off when I unplugged them. The one in the back leads me to believe it's for reverse lockout. I guess the 83 280zx 5 speed is mechanical instead.
