People get this wrong all the time. 43 and 35 years for somebody to have installed aftermarket, different, parts. Good luck.
CRS Posted May 1, 2018 Author Share #50 Posted May 1, 2018 True. When I pull the old clutch setup I'll compare to the new one. That's for tomorrow. Looking at this car they may be original parts. At this point diff and trans are on the ground. Good time to stop. Thanks all for the help.
Dave WM Posted May 1, 2018 Share #51 Posted May 1, 2018 Glad you are making good progress. Are you planning to do the rear main while you have the trans off?
Dave WM Posted May 1, 2018 Share #52 Posted May 1, 2018 get some pics of the action if you can, always fun to see what others are doing.
CRS Posted May 1, 2018 Author Share #53 Posted May 1, 2018 Yep it's moving along. Will be glad once done. I bought a felpro rear main. It's going in tomorrow with the new clutch setup and flywheel. I'll snap some pics too. It's amazing how much gear oil and dirt is all over the trans and diff.
Dave WM Posted May 1, 2018 Share #54 Posted May 1, 2018 while you have the flywheel out of the way for the rear main, take a look for signs of oil seepage from the rear bearing block side seals, now is the time to see if they are leaking.
Reptoid Overlords Posted May 1, 2018 Share #55 Posted May 1, 2018 I'm sure you already know, but just to be safe, the Fel-Pro rear main requires a bit of oil on the outer rim before installation.
Reptoid Overlords Posted May 1, 2018 Share #56 Posted May 1, 2018 A trick that@siteunseen taught me was to cover the input, output, gear selector areas with plumbing pipe end caps, clamped with hose style clamps. Then cover it with oven cleaner for an hour or so. Once its soaked in spray it down with high pressure water. It works great. You can then easily detail the remaining gunk with a wire brush. siteunseen Posted May 1, 2018 Share #58 Posted May 1, 2018 I used cheap Walmart oven cleaner on this one, then high pressure washer.
CRS Posted May 1, 2018 Author Share #59 Posted May 1, 2018 Looks good. Here is what the 4 speed looks like I removed.
CRS Posted May 1, 2018 Author Share #60 Posted May 1, 2018 @Dave WM see the 3 connectors I have on the side? The one missing the leads is for the backup lights. They broke off when I unplugged them. The one in the back leads me to believe it's for reverse lockout. I guess the 83 280zx 5 speed is mechanical instead.
