So the car never had one, just plugged. I got one from oreilys for $12.  Looks weird, not the original can type. Anyway, with it unplugged from the sending unit, no gauge movement, key on or running.  With it plugged in it does a full sweep with just turned to on, then when running goes to zero.  Is the sending unit just bad?

its a switch type you have in there, used with idiot lights.

It looks to be not the correct type or defective.   The gauge & wiring appear to be functional.

You can get a correct one from ZcarDepot for about 30 bucks.

I used ultra-power PS153; works like a charm, $3 bucks on rock auto.

Wow,  thanks, I ordered 2. Shipping cost more than the 2 units!

I wonder why the oreilly one was not working; they have warranties I assume? Seems like it was shorting out.
