Stage 4 cam, use it or sell?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, when I got the car the PO had purchased a handful of parts. One of them being a stage 4 cam for the rebuilt motor. Question I have is for guys who have experience with this cam and a refreshed 2.4,is it a worthy upgrade? Will I loose lots of bottom end, it will be a street car so launch is a priority aswell as rippin! I do have a lightened flywheel with it aswell. Should I sell this thing and buy sheet metal for the car or put it in the already complete motor..... Thanks guys. 20180621_124527.jpeg20180621_124535.jpeg

I think that you might have to buy a new set of lash pads to use that cam.  It's probably ground on a smaller base circle.  Might influence your decision.

Plus, if your engine is not built to handle the higher RPM range, you won't be able to use its full potential without damaging the engine.

Thanks eh, after some more thought I'm just going to sell it. I have a complete running motor, ill use what I got and go from there once I've driven it. Even if I do the leg work for this cam I think it comes away from where I want power

You should look for the "JAPAN" stamp on the cam. If it's an OE regrind with that stamp it's more desirable than Schneiders stock cams.

I I have a 270 80 and read until my eyes bled about this and found out the OE regrinds were much better. The stock they use has a lot higher tendency to wear down the lobes. My research FYI.  I'm sure there's someone who'll disagree. LOL

I couldn’t agree more Cliff. I only used a Schneider cam once (same specs as yours). It lost metal off of the number one lobe in the first 300 miles (and I did all the zinc and break in procedures) and I have never had a problem with an Isky regrind from the original Datsun billets. It’s not Schneider’s fault, they can only grind the new billets available, and they just aren’t up to snuff with the Japanese stuff. Many have been successful with Schneider’s on the new billets, but if I’m going to build an expensive performance engine, I don’t want to take any chances. IMO

I sent Schneider an OE  Japan stamped cam and they charged $120 to get what MSA calls a stage 3.

However I made a special scratch on my OE cam and it was not the one I received from them. Looked great though but I guess they use the "core" trade out method.

Thanks for your input Guy!

Cliff, aka Alabama Jama. LOL  We're gonna have some fun at ZCON.

225 USD shipped I figure. Camshaft, cam lube and breakin oil additive. As packaged from the original shop I think was zstore

I have a gentler Schneider NOS if interested in a trade. I'll post specs tomorrow.
