Posted June 27, 20186 yr comment_551887 Looking at a 71 survivor which was mentioned a few days ago in the title "Too rich for my blood". I have spoken to the dealer and gathered additional information. It's a two owner car with what looks to have a very solid body, 48,000 miles, original interior and paint. It sat in storage for 11 years before the dealer purchased it. they flushed the fuel tank, rebuilt the braking system and carbs, flushed the coolant and changed the fluids to get it running again. I had the dealer send me a bunch of under-body pics and pin point any flaws in the paint. I am trying to figure out how to include these photos since they were sent via Google Drive. Dealer has a little room to move but probably would not go under 45K unless he sits on it for a while. https://www.carsrememberwhen.com/inventory/1971-datsun-240z-/113591 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/60287-71-survivor-whats-it-worth/ Share on other sites

June 27, 20186 yr comment_551902 I don't like to voice opinions about car values, however I don't see any reason why the car is priced so well above the prices posted on the value index sites for similar cars. It is priced well above a recent auction pinnacle. It has had the emission system removed. I think that car is worth half the advertised value - max. June 27, 20186 yr comment_551906 Interesting car there. I noticed that you did not say motor was matching numbers. That would be a big item when it comes to price. The motor appears to have been out at one time since the motor mount bolts are installed with one facing down and the other facing up. That is kind of funny actually. Odd that the whole balance tube is stripped; Fast Idle control and everything, not just smog. The thing that is really bugging me in the pics is the dash. It is not original as the grain looks way too coarse and does not match the glove box door. Perhaps it is a 'Just Dashes' dash. I don't think it is a cap from the pics, but hard to tell. In it's favor, the car does have a lot of original stuff (seats, muffler, Paint (?)) and looks great. Given the above items, I would say the car is worth somewhere between $20K to $35K. The low number would be if the engine is not matching numbers. High end is if motor is matching numbers and paint is real nice. Just my opinion....feel free to ignore. June 28, 20186 yr comment_551928 Just be patient is my advise. If your seriously at spending that much I’d spend some time on BAT. Are you familiar with BAT? https://bringatrailer.com/ lf a car comes up post It here and I’m sure everyone will give you solid advice. Hagerty just updated the Z pricing estimates. June 28, 20186 yr comment_551930 What are your plans for the car? Why do you want one? Some people are looking for a good deal, some want the coolest car, some want the nostalgia and will drive it. That's where value is determined. If you're buying it as an investment, it seems overpriced. The oddness of the ad copy has already been mentioned. The car does not have a rich history, it actually has a somewhat bland history. Almost no history. There's no real story to it expect that the guy wants a lot of money for it. "This particular 240z has a rich history as well as a showroom new look with less then 49,000 original miles. It is completely original and unmolested. That means this car has stayed in showroom new condition for 47 years! Meaning, it is a special part of Datsun history. June 29, 20186 yr Author comment_552043 Thanks for your input. I have realized that this survivor car is priced too high for sure. I am on BAT everyday (love it) and have seen three Z's in the past year that were very nice. Sometimes they seem to get bid up, because of two or more competing buyers, to prices which end up at the current ceiling based on their condition. I plan on keeping it forever so I'll keep looking. June 29, 20186 yr comment_552059 I saw a car the other day on the internet for about $15k I think, and thought of this thread. For $15K and another 15 you could have about the same quality and a "rich" history, and drive it without ruining it's provenance. The car here is nice, but it seems like a person would be afraid to drive it. It's set up to be a museum piece. Once they fix the few errors.
