1970 240z Opinions on value

I have a source on a car not listed currently. It is rusty and he wants $4500. Needs floors and I’m sure a whole lot more. Vin he said is in the 13000 range. 

He is second owner and really no docs of any kind. Original owner parked it in a field in 84 and thus the condition.

It could be a nightmare underneath, it has some tell tale signs but who knows, go have a look.  There is a minimum price these days to get Z.

I'd strongly consider it for $4500. I'd need to see more pictures before deciding though.

Engine is locked, missing correct valve cover, air cleaner is wrong, carbs may or may not be included, and maybe more hidden rust that I may not even see. What really is left for value? E31 head, steering wheel and some misc stuff? Those items may bring $1200. Otherwise I just can’t see it.

I was going to make a joke before about how the car seemed fuzzy.  The pictures, of course.  Now I see why the seller went with fuzzy pictures.  You really wore your camera out.

The engine's internal parts might be worth a few dollars if the oil protected them.  Rocker arms, cam shaft.  Spray bar.

Tail light lenses.

seems like it would be a good project for someone that really really wants to learn welding and body work. Stuff like the rotted "A" pillar pinch welds, wow, don't recall seeing that. I was saying the same thing about the hatch glass as ZH. Also JSM noted the early steering wheel.

I hate to say it since I hate to see any Z destroyed, but that's a parts car. My early '71, which IMO is not worth fixing, is many times more solid than that car. And with a VIN of 13xxx, I'm surprised it's titled as a '70, and not a '71.

OMG, E31 head, steering wheel, glass, roof, maybe the slot wheels, I wouldn't give him a cent over $800.  The integrity of the unibody is gone, it's already sagging.

It would be interesting to see pictures of your car to see if your assessment of it being a parts car is correct. These cars get more salvageable every year...

I agree with others about this car though. It's done! The problem is you would need a ton of new metal. I suspect a lot of the panels rotted from the inside out due to the salt air. That means when the car gets cleaned up, a bunch of these panels won't be usable. 2 Quarters, inner and outer rockers, roof frame, rear hatch, both complete front rails, inner wheel wells, front strut towers, floor pans, 2 doors. Almost nothing would go untouched. Many of these parts would have to come from other donor cars. It doesn't make sense to use so many parts on just this one car when a good donor car could be used to save a bunch of other cars instead of this one. If it was a really low number car I might view that differently, but it's not.

Yep. Drivers door opened and closed fine, passenger would not. I honestly think it was hit in the rear too. True color is safari gold, but there appears to be a bend in the rear deck right where the strut tower meets on passenger side which I thought was odd, but then also look at the non original gas tank lid and the lime showing through and under the bumper as well. Plus the rot from the inside where the emblem was is really bad and looked like bonds too. To many unknowns.

I know he wants to get rid of it. I’m sure he will call me back and I’ll offer him $500.  He won’t take it but I really don’t need it.

an offer where  you are happy if the say yes or no is the right offer. "No", thank goodness dodged the bullet of having to hassle with it, "Yes", thank goodness I can't get hurt too badly, maybe can recover money as parts if decide to go that way. consider your time and effort to get and store and deal with tearing down if need to.

That car is sooo...sligthly worse than my 27th!  If you get the car and want to cut the roof off, I might go for the roof.  Is that rust or dents on the leading edge?  Otherwise, it looks pretty good?

Agreed, that car is toast.  I did see some interesting parts, though.  And never discount the hardware you can salvage.  All the little clips and tabs, the nuts and bolts.  They can get polished up and re-plated pretty easily.  I would be interested in the steering shaft, perhaps the rack.  Does it have tool lids behind the seats?  I could go for those.

The a/c compressor is vintage.  How's the wiring harness?

Let me know what you decide.  I say the car is worth $1,200
