Tachometer Pegging

Did it work before and now suddenly went hay wire, or is this the way it has always been?

What year Z are we talking here?

I had a similar thing happen with a 240. It was a pushed in pin on the 4 pin connector at the back of the tach and incorrect wiring at the coil. Short BW to the + coil, long BW and long GW to the ballast resistor (240z only)

Sorry, Joe. I forgot you asked me about testing the tach without the car running.

There is a way that I can think of, but it's not for the faint of heart. It would involve pulling the distributor (or using a junkyard distributor) and spinning it with a drill to provide a signal for the tach. There might be an easier test, but that will have to come from someone else.

Usually, the tach pegging is not a good sign for the tach. (Example: https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/20991-new-tach-problem-240z/) There are places that can repair the innards of gauges. Thank you for the info guys. It is a 1971 I did put a 123 ignition on it and from what I can remember it worked. I got the car back from paint thought I would hook up some interior things so I turned the key on and that is when I first started noticing the tach pegging out. I will put the old Distributer on the tach to see what happens Steve. Thank you again
