No serial number on engine. What does this mean?

I was just curious to look at the engine serial number on my 260 one day and I looked and saw the place where they were supposed to be, but no number. There is some surface rust on these elevated areas. Were the serial numbers on plates that were placed on the engine or were they engraved into the side of the engine? If it did have the number there and assuming it was the original engine, would they correspond to the car serial number?

I do not know what to make of this, when I first looked I was a bit dissapointed that they were not there because now I have no idea whether the engine was from this car or not. Maybe I am not at a total loss. Is there another way to identify the engine? Any help would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Ben

Are you sure that you are looking in the right place? Spark plug side of engine all the way to the rear, just below the cylinder head. If you are looking in the right place, take a little steel wool or an abrasive kitchen pot scrubber and clean the area. They were stamped into the engine block.

The number would NOT match the VIN of the car. The serial number of the engine that came with the car from the factory would be on the VIN plate that is screwed to the inner fender (passenger side) of the engine compartment. That is the only place that you will find the serial number of the original engine.
