As a fellow Porsche & Z owner, I think you probably need to sprinkle a few $$$$$$ around the four cylinder engine illustrated parts breakdown to make it a really good nightmare. November 16, 20186 yr Author comment_561691 Dennis, that’s actually a Type I VW motor, not a Type IV 914 motor but you’re right. I’m so glad mine is a 6. It is rock-solid dependable and so easy to own. My old 4 cylinder 914’s were a nightmare! I agree with you about the four cylinder 914s. I had a couple before I finally got my Sixer. A 1970 that never let me down and a 1974 that I never drove farther from home than I could walk back. I've had the 914-6 for 26 years and it's probably time to let someone else have fun with it. Only one problem the first year I owned it - a bad component in the distributor and otherwise nothing but gas and tune ups. November 16, 20186 yr Author comment_561703 You know of course that if your VIN starts in 914 you have a car worth close to and sometimes well over 6 figures right? Good appreciation over the years. Just have to keep raising the insurance value every year or so. Selling is a hard decision to make. But, it's time. November 19, 20186 yr comment_561963 It's funny that I'm way more worried about the body of my Z cars than anything mechanical, but it's the exact opposite for my Porsche 996. At any moment, the engine could grenade and I'll be left with a giant repair bill. I've been thinking about you since Sunday after watching a cool documentary about the Rouge F series plant in Dearborn. Sorry to change the subject guys but it was a great show. November 19, 20186 yr comment_561978 Hey Cliff, what's new? That plant is only a few miles from my office. I am on the car side though, so I haven't been there in years. I am finally about to start working on the Z race car again. I have all the engine parts needed and right after Thanksgiving, I plan to put the engine back together. Once that's done, I am going to rewire the entire car and upgrade the brakes.
