I get the impression that he wasn't trying to avoid paying taxes. More a case of trying to avoid letting the stockholders know just how much he was actually receiving in total compensation. 

 

But how much can one man spend and still sleep at night?

I think a lot of people with mental disorders are in high corporate positions due to their illogical greed and lust for power. I've seen quite a few greed-driven co-workers rise and fall.

Evidently his compensation was about half what other top CEO's at his level were making. I am sure that is a big part of how guys at this level keep score, which at some point is what this is all about.
