I asked the same question not so long ago. The answer was KYB=Keep your Bilsteins. I went for Tokico's (not the Illumina adjustables) and I am very pleased with the result.

I'm glad to hear that. That's the same thing that I've gone with (as well as Tokico springs and urethane bushings everywhere). I stopped by the shop today to check on the progress of my car and the guy doing the work said the struts he replaced appeared to be the originals. If true that's amazing after 185,000 miles. I expect there to be quite a difference in the ride.

I was reading that Tokico's lower a z about an inch. If this is true, are strut spacers needed for correct suspension geometry. I know neg camber within reason is usually a good thing, but I think it was a Jim Cook catalog that talked about chaning the z's roll center being counterproductive

You're probably right about the Tokico springs lowering the car about an inch. On the other hand, I'm fairly certain my original springs were sagging a bit so the ride height may not seem different once it's all back together.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing with the Tokico's. The price is right and my car seems to ride a little too high with the front and rear bumpers removed and fiberglass ones installed. Had new struts installed before I started the resto and the car now looks like it's a 4x4.

I think you will find for your question who supplys Tokico in AUSTRALIA the ANSWER is most probably nil ,no one, non.

I am sure they pulled out of the aussie market, you may have to buy from the west coastof the US or somwhere in Europe.

Watch on EBAY as well.

Look at the website in the states for all the info you need i think it should be easy to deal with the US based Company.

I put KYB's, Suspension Techniques lowering springs & urethane bushings all around on my '73, about 4 years ago. I've been very happy with it. :classic: I had KYB's on my first 240 19 years ago, and, obviously, was happy then, too.

Maybe it's a case of never trying something else? Ignorance is bliss, perhaps????

The OEM shock in the majority of Nissans/Datsuns are Tokico's.

Actually, they tend to manufacture the entire MacPherson strut!

Anyway, I've used OEM Tokico's, KYB gas (black), Koni Special-D & KYB Super-street adjustables in my Zed & Skylines.

The Super-Streets are about $700 AUD/pair (ouch), the KYB Gas are about $150 & the Koni's were about $400.

In a street car the KYB gas were marvelous, slightly firmer than stock, but a lovely ride. The Super streets can be made damn stiff (I need different springs in my DR30, as it axle-tramps a bit under wheelspin conditions). The Koni's are very nice too, but they must be removed to adjust them.

I've also driven 1100km in one day in a 260Z coupe with Bilsteins & they were pretty damn stiff.

IMHO all the brands mentioned above a just fine for a weekend warrior through to a full-on racer, the important part is buying the correct model shock to suit your requirements. My KYB gas shocks wouldn't like to be thrashed around the track every weekend - they'd die a very premature death, but the Super-Streets would be a different story.
