rod bearings

They are bearings that are mounted in between the surface of the piston connecting rods and the surface of the crankshaft. They are the "wear surface" that contacts the crankshaft. As the piston goes up and down in the cylinder, the piston connecting rod transmitts that motion into rotation of the crankshaft. The rod bearing is made of softer metal than either the connecting rod or the crankshaft. These bearings wear instead of the rod or crankshaft as the engine operates.

They are not round balls that are normaly associated with a bearing. The "bearing" in this case is a thin curved(half circle - two of them) 'plate' (for the lack of a better word) that has two halfs - one fits in the rod cap the other in the rod itself. The diameter created by the bearings is 'wraped' around the crank shaft. The rod bearing is made up of 3 - 4 different types of metal - making it an alloy. An oil film is the lubrication between(very small space) the rod bearing and the crank shaft. When the rod bearing becomes excesivly worn (the space that is between the bearing and the crank is to large)

The motor sounds like a hammer factory - hence we say it has a rod knock.
