Sailor Bob Posted April 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2019 Good day ladies and gentlemen, i havent logged in for a long time, but i think thats going to change to being the guy you're sick of hearing from. Im way up north in Newfoundland and i have a 73 that i tucked away in the back of my shed / garage 10 years ago and forgot about. Just retired-a couple of years ago and after clocking 100k miles on my bike im thinking of a more practical hobby. Long story short, I have a rebuilt f54/p90 modified with compression pumped up, ready to go carbureted. Most of the go fast gear sitting in boxes ready to be bolted on but not everything im going to maintain her as a typical Z. Appearance wise other than engine and pipes. at this stage im dismantling and scratching my head. Engine is out and the car looks pretty good. Trying to figure how much is transferable to the replacement engine. Thoughts and experience pointers welcome. If you know obvious considerations, please throw them out here for me to ponder. ill stick in a few pictures of the state of affairs.
Zed Head Posted April 16, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 16, 2019 Does the P90 have carb manifold mounting holes? You'll need the right gasket, not the L24 gasket, since you have injector cutouts in the head. The P90 exhaust ports are rectangular so your L24 manifold might work. Not sure if the rectangles are smaller on the smaller engine's exhaust manifold though. You'll want to measure. People who know say that a more free-flowing exhaust system is the first best thing you can do to release some power. Those small L24 exhaust pipes left hanging in your picture might need some changing. I think that the rest of the parts, externally, are all swappable. Looks like some fun. Sailor Bob Posted April 16, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted April 16, 2019 Hey ZH, i have some pipes and a header. Ill post a few pics of them, maybe tomorrow. grannyknot Posted April 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2019 Hi Bob, welcome back. Your newly rebuilt L28 will drop in and fit perfectly with very few if any problems. As ZH mentioned you will have to rig the L28 Ex manifold or header to the other exhaust system. Always a good idea to clean up the engine bay now that you have a chance. We love lots of pics
siteunseen Posted April 16, 2019 Share #5 Posted April 16, 2019 The fuel delivery pump will need some thought also. Your head won't accept a mechanical pump as it's cast. You could get a low pressure electric pump way cheaper than milling out the hole for a mechanical pump. Always enjoy reading about a resurrection. Diseazd Posted April 17, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 17, 2019 Wow Sailer Bob.....it’s been a while.......welcome back. I have a number of threads I’ve started on building the F54/p79 combo. Shaving the head and shimming the towers is the secret to getting performance from your set up.....flat tops also. I would make the cut out for the manual fuel pump.....you can always go either way if you choose. Guy
Sailor Bob Posted April 17, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted April 17, 2019 Hey Guy, we’re on the same page on the head. Had it done years ago, brought it home from the machine shop and got lost in some other project. It sat in the garage wrapped in cellophane on a wood crate until yesterday. Anyway, back in the game. Fuel is one of the main issues. Cooling is the another, not sure if the old rad will do and there is nt really a standard for the hoses. All in good time, no panic. Ill have a look through your threads see what i can find.
LeonV Posted April 17, 2019 Share #12 Posted April 17, 2019 The P90 should already have the hole for a mechanical pump, it's covered by a bolt-in blanking plate. Now is a good time to install a 10lb flywheel, you won't regret it. ?
