Posted May 20, 200321 yr comment_38033 I want to know what those of you with mildly built motors are running for a muffler, and on what size pipe? I'm looking at Auto-x events and I need to make my non-muffled car 'neighborhood friendly'I currently have an unknown header 6 into 1, 2.5" back to the rear diff, then a 3" S-pipe (non mandral bent) to snake through the rear suspension, followed by no muffler at all. Too damn loud! It does make mechanics grin like idiots though.I can get Flowmasters from Summit racing with a 3" in and out. Do I need a muffler than comes in High, Center, or Low, and does it need to exit High, Center, or Low to go out the stock valence hole?I've already read the tips about downturned pipes on the end, and will add a 45 degree tip to turn it down. Thanks for all of the help! More pics to be posted soon!Eric aka Zeemunkey Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6232-muffler-survey/ Share on other sites

May 20, 200321 yr comment_38040 Do you want a 3" outlet due to the fact that you have an L28t, or just cause its racier for an NA motor? If your running an NA Z, I'd recommend a 2 1/2" exhaust for starters...then whatever you want for a muffler...all the same straight throughs (unless they're offset, don't get one of these for racing)..so get one that is lightest!Cheers ppl! May 20, 200321 yr Author comment_38058 Motor:2.8 crank, 2400 block bored .030, 272/272 cam, unknown compression ratio, unknown pistons. recurved mechanical advance distributor, Accel super coil (big yeller mutha) and Mopar "orange box" ignition controller (whatever benefit that brings). Weber 32/36 DGV manual choke carbs, soon to be rebuilt and tuned to match the motor's power curve (air correction jets are WAY too large right now). I figure its a high-compression, 2.6 liter by the way it revs... and it revs QUICK! Sounds more like the porsche race motors I heard a Willow Springs last summer...ZMunkey Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6232-muffler-survey/#findComment-38058 Share on other sites
May 20, 200321 yr comment_38088 seems like you have a stroked 2.4do yourself a favor and stay away from the flomasters.they hardly FLO that well at all. and would be a restriction in the exhaust.like the ones i mentioned would be good for your application.you may want to go down in size on your exhaust though liek leeroy mentioned and use qa 2.5 inch exhaust. 3 inch is just a little to much for this motor.good luck with whatever you decide. May 21, 200321 yr comment_38181 Anyone got just a Supertrapp tuneable muffler at the end? That's what I have planned for when I drop my engine back in with new headers, but I'm not sure if it will be too loud (even with the quietest adjustment) for daily driving. May 22, 200321 yr comment_38416 I have had a 2.5in exhaust and muffler for 25 years and been very happy with the flow and sound. Loud sweet Jaguar sound under load and high rpm but not too, if you know what I mean.It is the one that is mandrel bent from MSA I think.Any way, my real point is use a large capacitly 2.5 in inlet/outlet muffler for a turbocharged application. These have minimum restrictions because the turbo quiets the exhaust and therefore the muffler doesn't need to do much quieting. Use one from any muffler shop and ask for something like a turbo GM product such as the Buick Gran Sport, etc. Check the size that will fit in the stock area of the left rear fender area next to the fuel tank. I am assuming here you are talking early Z.Question. Why does the pipe "snake through the suspension" The original exhaust and mine now as well, travels under the car all the way to the rear. Remove Three bolts off the manifold, and three hangers, and the system drops to the ground! Slide it out and put a new one under and bolt up. May 22, 200321 yr comment_38439 I had a 6-1 header and 32/36 dgv webers on my car. I had a Dynomax and I liked it alot, but I haven't heard any other brands. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6232-muffler-survey/#findComment-38439 Share on other sites
May 22, 200321 yr comment_38500 I've got a mild L28 w/ street cam(not big), 45mm webers, msd 6a box, 3-2 headers into 2.5" pipe back to the stock muffler location with a 2-chamber flowmaster.my thoughts:1. It' damn loud!2. It's sounds better than you can imagine.3. Lotta resonance at 2200-2700rpmIf I did it again, I would try to find something 'a bit' quieter. But it's turning into a racecar quick so WHO CARES!!!Aren Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6232-muffler-survey/#findComment-38500 Share on other sites
