Posted May 21, 200321 yr comment_38192 Just wondering if anyone has input on this. As I sit and ponder the fact of a 'cross-flow' engine system, I really start to wonder why this design wasn't used as a standard on the L-series engines.FYI, cross-flow means that the exhaust and intake manifolds are on opposite sides of the engine. To me, this seems like a more logical design for an engine.Any input? May 21, 200321 yr comment_38196 if a design defies logic its obviously to cut costs.maybe it was cheaper and easier to have a pre-crossflow, after all the 240z was built to a price Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38196 Share on other sites
May 21, 200321 yr comment_38200 Well there is a cross flow head developed for the L series. It was from memory a twin cam and at it's time cost USD 20K +I think there is a snap of one in the gallery somewhere Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38200 Share on other sites
May 21, 200321 yr comment_38202 the Z432R had a twin cam cross flow head, could that be the one your thinking of? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38202 Share on other sites
May 21, 200321 yr comment_38210 is it possible to get one of these for myself? hehe.. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38210 Share on other sites

May 21, 200321 yr comment_38213 What is the advantage of a crossflow head? The only disadvantage(that I see) to the 'standard' L series head is that the exhaust manifold is so close to the intake manifold. Where are the spark plugs located on a crossflow head?- jeff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38213 Share on other sites

May 21, 200321 yr comment_38216 you got it Jeff, having the intake and exhaust on the one side increase intake temperatures, and reduces power. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38216 Share on other sites

Can you think of a way to COOL the intake manifold.- Jeff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38218 Share on other sites
May 21, 200321 yr comment_38220 i nice big heat shield in between the intake and exhaust can help, the stock one is pathetic. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6248-why-are-cross-flows-so-rare/#findComment-38220 Share on other sites
