Why are cross-flows so rare?

Just wondering if anyone has input on this. As I sit and ponder the fact of a 'cross-flow' engine system, I really start to wonder why this design wasn't used as a standard on the L-series engines.

FYI, cross-flow means that the exhaust and intake manifolds are on opposite sides of the engine.

To me, this seems like a more logical design for an engine.

Any input?

if a design defies logic its obviously to cut costs.

maybe it was cheaper and easier to have a pre-crossflow, after all the 240z was built to a price

Well there is a cross flow head developed for the L series.

It was from memory a twin cam and at it's time cost USD 20K +

I think there is a snap of one in the gallery somewhere

the Z432R had a twin cam cross flow head, could that be the one your thinking of?

What is the advantage of a crossflow head?

The only disadvantage(that I see) to the 'standard' L series head is that the exhaust manifold is so close to the intake manifold.

Where are the spark plugs located on a crossflow head?

Plugs are located on the top of the head.

you got it Jeff, having the intake and exhaust on the one side increase intake temperatures, and reduces power.

Can you think of a way to COOL the intake manifold.

i nice big heat shield in between the intake and exhaust can help, the stock one is pathetic.
