Here is my attempt at decoding the Nissan part number for this bolt, from the parts book the part number and description is:

08124-03010   BOLT - HEX M10 (UPTO 07/73)

image.png

Here is the decode:

08124-03010   BOLT - HEX M10

  08 = standardize hardware prefix
  12 =  Hexagon Bolt, Medium carbon steel
  40 = 10mm diameter (M10)
  30 = 30mm length
  1    = Zinc cadmium coated
  0   = Filler to complete ten digits

Decode source:  http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=NES_Part_Numbers

Here is a snippet from an old Nissan technical publication about standard bolts, from this and info in the link above, my interpretation is that "Medium carbon steel" for this bolt would likely indicate a "7" marking on the head.

I think that info should be posted to the resource page!

For me personally I will never remember what thread I saw that in when I want to find it later and I doubt I could craft a Google search to find it either

I will take that on in my spare time. To do it right, I will need to gather some more references and information first.

I will include a tips and tricks section with things like using this decode method to help identify those "extra" fasteners that we seem to have leftover after assembly. When you have the 10 digit part number you can then use the parts book to see where a part is used. Here's an example with the bolt we've been discussing. This chart directs you to the correct micro-fiche and section  showing places the part is used. 08124-03010 is also used on the rear engine/tranny mount as well, on micro-fiche 2

I found two of them - I think.  They are 30 mm long, but the threaded portion is more like 23 mm instead of 21, by my measurement.  The prior owner of the car had done some rear suspension work and apparently, while going through that work, was replacing most of the factory hardware with 8.8 grade stuff.  Luckily nearly all the stock hardware was kept with the car.  But, two of the bolts I do not have.  And interestingly, my transmission crossmember bolts are similar, but have 9's on them.  So they aren't right either, I guess.  For now, I'll use two of the grade 8.8 bolts (pictured).

While I'd like to get 4 of these (two for the crossmember and two for the transmission), it isn't the end of the world if I can't track some down.

I also ran into this unexpected problem tonight - the "240z" OEM brake shoes I bought are for some other Nissan model.  Note the location of the "eyelet" holes in the metal stamping for the two inner (OEM) vs the two outer (black) shoes (aftermarket) that were installed in the car when I got it.  Whatever B701 FE is, it isn't unique to the correct OEM versions of the shoes for a 240z.

Brake shoes are pretty cheap parts for this car, comparatively.  I'd like to have some OEM ones.  So, I found some online in Austria.  I'll see if those are legit.  Otherwise, I guess I will install the ones that were installed by the previous owner.

A few pics of the brake cylinder I also installed tonight:

I bought some OEM ones in 1994.. They stayed in the "warehouse" till 2000 and used them on my 240z. After about 20 years so around 2020 one of the brakepads came lose on one brakeshoe! They were original nissan as i ordered them myself at nissan.

So they don't last forever..  But hey who knows how old they were before I got them..

Btw.. no fun having some lose parts in your drum, Luckely i was just 100mtrs from home and went back and installed some other ones.

I had a look at the bolts for my transmission crossmember, and they do have the 7 on the head but they are only 25mm long. Definitely original as they have the yellow paint mark on them. Looks like there was some switching happening on the factory floor. Did you find any that are 25mm long?

Also while searching the web for a JIS fastener dimension chart with the older small heads I came across a company called Fastener Mart. I have never ordered from them but they do list M10x1.25 x 30mm long JIS B 1180 small head. Here is a link, on that page there is a link to a pdf dimensional chart with JIS B 1180, DIN, ISO and ANSI specs. The chart does show 14mm A/F x 7mm head ht. for JIS B 1180, M10. Likely the head marking  would be 8.8

Belmetric.com also has JIS bolts and nuts.

I have bought a lot from Belmetric. I found the best way to search for JIS stuff is to type JIS into their searchbar. That brings them all up. I got a bunch of these that came in handy in lots of places:
