Very nice seeing this kind of effort to re-use original materials. I was lucky when I removed my headliner that the foam was in excellent shape and came out perfectly with no damage to the vinyl or foam. I used a 1.25" wide paint scraper with the corners rounded off. If it helps I could get you a measurement of the thickness.

Yes, please let me know how thick yours is.  Uncharacteristic of me, I threw mine away before measuring and the trash got taken away today!

Between the decal and the sunroof, there was no way I could salvage this headliner!

You may want to check a store like hobby lobby for foam. I bought a near perfect match for a bmw headliner there. I have had good luck with 3M headliner spray on adhesive.

Will do, it will be a couple of days before I can get to it.

Btw.. i wouldn't reuse the headliner.. it's very old.. too old.  There is a lot of cheap pvc for sale that looks exactly the same and can be glued much easyer than the old (gone) hard pvc.

In my case the headliner, both the vinyl and foam backing are in excellent shape. No damage to the vinyl and the foam (polyurethane?) is still fully intact and still has excellent flexibility, memory. The original headliner has a very unique fine grain and light "stippling" effect that I have yet to see on reproductions. Repos I've seen have almost no graining or to much with what looks like perforations. If someone makes one that is very close to OEM I may possibly go that route but for my restoration I am trying to use/re-use as many original parts and materials as I can. Here a few pics of my OE headliner showing the texture at different angles, it's hard to capture in pics.

The very unique arrangement of pin holes forming a circular pattern on the original headliner is not something I have seen in any replacements.  There are pros and cons for going either direction, but I would like my headliner to be the original vinyl with those holes.

That is great that yours is in such good condition CantechZ, and the pillar trim too.

Measured the foam on my replacement headliner from Banzai. Its a bit over 1/2 inch. I measured another old one from a 280 and it was a little less than 1/2 inch. I would say 1/2 inch foam would be about right. FWIW, the one from the 280 did not have any holes.

Does the replacement headliner from Banzai have the holes?

Here is the measurement of the OE headliner from my 7/70, overall thickness 11mm (.433") and best I could measure the vinyl thickness is 0.3 mm (.012")

Here's a pic showing the grain and "stipple" pattern with a tape measure. I call it stippling as it's more of a depression, definitely not a hole that goes through the vinyl.

  • 1 month later...

After pinging the paint shop once weekly for many weeks for an update, I slowed to every other week.  Responses were all the same - haven't started yet.  I stopped asking. I finally got an email on Friday, requesting door latch, hatch latch, hood latch hardware and hood springs, and attached to the email were two pages of issues that they noted - I assume that is their punch list so far.  Along with that, they made mention of maybe starting on June 22nd.

Just venting here for a moment, but if I could have had the car in my possession from when I dropped it off on February 19th until say... the third week of June, I could have had it absolutely PERFECT.  I busted my arse to get it done back in Feb, and "ran out of time" on my punch list for no good reason at all.

Why did I deliver it then?  That is when they told me to!

Ugggghhhhhhhh!

It is the same thing with my Honda S2000, by the way.  I dropped that car off... I don't know, maybe 5 weeks ago to have some frame straightening work done.  They said they would get to it in about 2-3 weeks.  Follow up with them 3 weeks later - they said we're looking at at least 3 weeks.

Ugggghhhhhhhh!

Why can't these businesses do better with their timelines?  Remember my parts plater?  G_d - took more than 6 months to get that done and back to me!  Oh, and the new engine for my other 240z - haha... it has been nearly 7 years now.  At least that has been done and sitting on an engine stand bolted to a pallet for 6 months.

Ok, end of rant.

So, the update for this thread, the paint shop may start on their part of the work towards the end of June.   😑
