[2020] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?

Im working on making my car more comfortable, i cleaned around the hatch of the car, added some sound-deadening inside the empty spare wheel well. Got the arm rest installed on the drivers door....

My buddy gave me some moving blankets, i just realized i could cut one up and have it go under the rear carpet for some additional dampening.

ooof. gotta install the headliner back in the car, maybe this weekend....

Took mine out on this pleasant sunny day.  After the first mile I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed I had an unwelcome passenger....a red wasp!  Had to go another 2 miles before I could pull over and open the rear hatch to let him free range. Glad traffic wasn't bad!

I did the sound proofing thing last summer - and wow!! It’s so much more enjoyable for a mere 10-15kgs more. I covered 40-60% of panels - you don’t need to cover the entire panel.

I did the wheel well, rear deck, the doors made a HUGE difference, the trans tunnel, floors and some of the bulkhead. I wish I had the headliner loose like yours to do the same but didn’t want to rip it off. Do that one and you get a huge reduction in wind noise and resonance. Rear strut towers are particularly noisy parts of the car. So I did this ...

I wish I had done a better video of the actual insulation but this was just to show some friends the difference ...

Also, for the under carpet thing and between door cards and the doors I used closed cell foam like these ...

12mm under carpet, 1.5mm doors ...

The MLV reduces panel vibration, the closed cell reduces reflections within the car.

Upside: much less wind and road noise, far nicer cruising, you get to hear the exhaust better as it’s less like night club loud and more high end hifi loud.

Downside: with all the white noise and resonance gone, you can now hear all the transmission / mechanical whines ;)

I replaced a broken Helicoil  on my #6 cylinder today, or should I say the last two and 1/2 days... .  It started when I was checking my plugs when I noticed #6 came out with the helicoil attached.  No big deal I thought, I'll just put some lock tight on it and put it back in,  until I noticed was only half of the helicoil.  Checked the head and sure enough the other half was still there. Aaarrgh!  End result was that I successfully removed the stuck half without having to remove the head.?  I did learn a couple of new things that hope I won't have to remember.

Joined 84 members of our local car club on “Celebrate” Cruise for one wedding and five birthdays plus a food bank donation .here is a short version. Checkout the “Bird” in front of me, it’s an original survivor and his second car is a GTR. Then look for the red 570 Ferrari at the end. Yesterday she was driving her other car. A Mclaren.

Took the renowned Mr. Brown out of winter storage. Started right up. Took it for a short drive to un-flatten the tires. Nice to have him back. Now I can practice safe social distancing in style.

Cheers, Mike

I did the exact same thing just the other day! We actually got two days in a row where it did NOT rain, and I took my Z out for a bit.

On the good side, it started right up and ran exactly the same as it did when I put it away last fall. On the bad side, all of the unfinished winter projects are still un-finished.  LOL

Those wheels look great dude! Did you use a proper spray gun or rattle can?

BTW 7 year old tyres! Are they still gripping OK in the wet? Mine were truly gone at that point even with 6.5mm left. And yes I had a VERY big scare one wet day.

Yeah, rattle can and heat gun. Worked out well.

Tires are still very good, don’t get many miles per year and never in rain. But aiming for new wheels next season.
