Value of Second Hand Parts

Thought I'd fly this up the flagpole and see who salutes.

As many of you would know, I am currently parting out my 2+2. One of the difficulties of such an exercise is knowing what to ask for the various bits and pieces. I don't want to rip people off but by the same account, I don't want to be ripped off either.

Would there be any value in having an area among the club pages where members could log the prices paid for spares along with a simple condition descriptor so that when we go to buy or sell stuff we are paying/asking a fair price.

We just need to have different pages for different countries, obviously.

I think it would be nice to know what the going prices of parts are in stated conditions. If we could fit it in somewhere - maybe a new forum?

Lets see if Mike G. has any input on the idea.

Nigel, its bloody tought trying to work this out, I usually just waited and saw what people were willing to pay for it, for one set of 2+2 doors I got 250 bucks, yet the last door I sold ended up going for 25 bucks (not too happy about that) it more just what people are willing to pay. If you only get one offer on a part, then take that offer if you want to sell it, if not you're stuck with the part and no money. Thats just how I work.

At the risk of sounding trite: The value of an item is that value that that item will bring.

Sounds like an idiot statement but it isn't. Trying to define the value of an item is an exercise of discussion, as that value cannot be determined until such a time as the item is offered for sale and the value can then be established.

A part for a Z might be offered up for a low $....until you discover that you have to pay big $ to get it transported.

Additionally, and I've found this to be true, if there is a "meet" or show coming up, then expect items to go for higher $ than immediately AFTER the show. (Case in Point: There was a big Roadster meet in California just recently. Just about every part offered up on e-Bay went for high $ with lots of bidding against it. Shortly after the meet, items would go the full 7 days with nary a bid.)

I usually look at what new or reproduction parts are going for and base my prices on that to some extent. The harder the part is to find, the higher the new price is going to be, and the used parts are worth just a little more than the run-of-the-mill easily found parts.

Gives me an idea what the "market" will bear.... I normally don't ask much more than 1/2 what the new price is, unless it's something that is really tough to find new.
