Zed Head Posted August 4, 2020 Author Share #1110 Posted August 4, 2020 30,000 person experiment. I'm so glad I don't have to make today's decisions. I just needed to watch my bank account and avoid getting sick since I had no insurance. Big university classrooms are packed. This can't end well. https://www.wdrb.com/news/university-of-kentucky-begins-performing-covid-19-tests-on-30-000-students/article_ccd25f62-d5a5-11ea-8cda-e76d7ab72ba4.html https://covidactnow.org/us/ky/county/fayette_county?s=819151
Pilgrim Posted August 5, 2020 Share #1111 Posted August 5, 2020 I just heard a news story that added some perspective. Many people like to argue that CO-19 isn't worse than flu, which kills a certain number of people every year. I heard yesterday that in my state (Colorado) only about 50% of the population gets a flu shot annually. My bet is that Colorado probably has a higher flu vaccination rate then many other states (although we have a pretty depressing number of anti-vaxers in K-12). It's pretty obvious to me that we'd have fewer flu fatalities if more people got vaccinated. Taking preventive measures helps you stay healthy; doesn't matter if it's masks, separation or vaccination. Ditto for the need to take advantage to fight CO-19 when vaccinations become available. Here are the CDC estimated influenza related deaths by year. 2018-2019, 34,157 2017-2018, 61,099 2016-2017, 38,230 2015-2016, 22,705 2014-2015, 51,376 2013-2014, 37,930 2012-2013, 42,570 2011-2012, 12,447 2010-2011, 36,656 This year we're already at 150,000+ Covid-19 deaths and it's climbing after a slow start. Pilgrim Posted August 5, 2020 Share #1113 Posted August 5, 2020 Unfortunately facts don't matter to those who are convinced that they are being persecuted. They may wear seat belts and motorcycle or bike helmets, but a face mask is an abhorrent thing that trespasses on their 'Murrican liberty.
Zed Head Posted August 5, 2020 Author Share #1114 Posted August 5, 2020 Schools are opening as we sit. Some are already quarantining teachers and students after positive test results. As a bunch of rational thinkers here on our car forum, it's easy to see that it's just not going to work. You can't put a bunch of snot-nosed kids together, or even teenagers, and expect disease to not spread. Schools will be the new nursing homes, disease spreading centers. We won't have to wait for Fall to see the case numbers start rising again. They'll probably be rising again before the end of August, if they don't just keep rising from now. Not trying to be contentious here, but the 'deaths climbing' will always be a fact of life for any statistic of living things. When the number of deaths does not climb we have either A) ALL achieved immortality B. the resurrection of the dead is happening in real time or C) the Zombie apocalypse is upon us. One of my 'pet peeve' phrases. Edited August 5, 2020 by motorman7
