COVID-19

I had a routine doctor's appointment this morning. He says all his colleagues are very worried about the vacines. It's impossible to rush a vaccine through the trials needed. The frontline workers aren't willing to be the Guinea pigs on this political cluster flub.

I've been wondering also about how two vaccines with such high efficacy could be developed so quickly.  And it's not clear if there are side effects.  If you lower the bar to "no deaths" then passing is easy.  Let's see who steps up to get the first shots.

What ever happened to the Russian vaccine?

Lessons from people who didn't listen.  How to kill your grandparents.  I hope they make it but if they don't, it will be a wedding to remember.

https://www.wlwt.com/article/local-couple-shares-story-after-wedding-becomes-a-super-spreader-event/34694908

Due to the pandemic and to protect their guests, they cut their guest count from 200+ to 85. Eighty-three guests attended the wedding ceremony and reception.

Two weeks later, 32 guests have tested positive, including the newlyweds and three of their grandparents. Two grandparents had to visit the emergency room due to severe symptoms.

"Weddings are definitely scary right now. I didn't think that almost half of our wedding guests were gonna get sick," Mikayla Bishop said. "You're in the moment. You're having fun. You don't think about COVID anymore."

The couple provided masks and hand sanitizer at the entrance to the venue but quickly found out that few guests took advantage of them.

"My big moment honestly was right when the ceremony started and the doors opened and both my parents walked me down the aisle. The first thing I see is I see everyone's face. And that's when I realized wow. Nobody's wearing a mask," Mikayla Bishop said. "I'm walking down the aisle. We can't do anything now."

"When I saw everyone not wearing masks I was just like, 'Oh, well I guess we're just gonna kinda go with it I guess,'" Anthony Bishop said.

Here's another wedding story for sports fans (soccer/football).  A national super star with all of the best testing and education available lets down a whole nation just by being dumb and selfish.  But he is just a football player, not a rocket scientist.  It must be the invisibility of the virus.  Out of sight, out of mind.

Lots of irony in this story.  "diligence and dedication" but no common sense.  The old guys sticking together.  Just be tougher than the virus.  Kick it to the curb.  Grassley is 87 and McConnell is 78.

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2020/11/18/chuck-grassley-coronavirus-covid-19-diagnosis-symptom-free/6339013002/

Grassley has not said where he believes he was exposed to the virus. He was most recently in the Senate on Monday, where he made remarks on the floor without a mask on and spoke with colleagues while wearing a mask. He also attended a meeting with Senate Republican leadership on Monday, which includes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

McConnell addressed Grassley's diagnosis in remarks on the Senate floor Wednesday morning. He praised Grassley for setting the Senate record of 27 years without missing a single Senate vote and wished him well.

"This show of diligence and dedication is remarkable by any measure. But because of who Sen. Grassley is, it hasn’t seemed remarkable at all," McConnell said of Grassley's record voting streak. "That incredible commitment to serving Iowans and working around the clock is just who our colleague is. That devotion is just his daily routine."

I think it's good to keep in mind that anything at this stage is vaccine 1.0.  There will be 1.1, 1.2, etc.

Problems which immediately occurred to me about the first vaccines which are two-dose are:

1. How many people will get dose 1, but never return for dose 2?

2. How many people will get dose 1, but won't get dose 2 at the proper time?

3. How many people will get dose 1, then need dose 2 but can't remember which vaccine it is (and don't have records)?

So although I look forward to having vaccines (and expect to take advantage of them), I don't think we really have anything workable for the long haul until we have single-dose vaccines which also have high efficacy.

My nephew got married in June in Wyoming - deepinahearta no mask country.

BUT - they didn't let anyone in the church without a mask. Period. And they spaced out the seating.

The reception was outdoors at a ranch nearby, and there was a reasonable amount of spacing going on.

It turned out OK.
