Posted March 27, 20204 yr comment_595624 Hi gang, Installing a new fuel sending unit (top loader for a '78 280z) but don't remember which direction the arm is supposed to face once installed (towards the front of the car/rear/left or right side). I keep bumping the internal bits of the tank during installation and once almost ran out of gas because the arm must have been jammed up against something in the tank denoting a full tank on the gas gauge. Any idea which way the arm is supposed to face once installed in the tank for a '78? -chase Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/63760-fuel-sending-unit-install-direction/ Share on other sites

March 27, 20204 yr Author comment_595630 So if this is accurate in terms of install direction and not just facing that direction for ease of drawing, that would mean that the float should be pointed to the front of the car? March 27, 20204 yr comment_595631 Are you sure that it will actually lock down in a backward direction? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/63760-fuel-sending-unit-install-direction/#findComment-595631 Share on other sites
March 27, 20204 yr comment_595632 I was thinking the spaces were different sizes when dropped back in. Two were smaller than the other so it could only go one way. It's been many years so I'm most likely wrong. March 27, 20204 yr comment_595639 This here is the tab that you see when you take the ring off. The sender body has the matching notch. Actually hold on, isn't that dimple on the retainer ring and not the fuel sender unit itself? March 28, 20204 yr comment_595680 Look at the tank, not the ring. There are three raised tabs that the lock ring, locks under but at Zed's arrow there is a piece of metal that is folded down. There should be a notch in the edge of the sender that aligns with that piece of metal Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/63760-fuel-sending-unit-install-direction/#findComment-595680 Share on other sites
