New timing chain

I made a start this afternoon on changing the head on my 280 motor. Everything was going well, I took off the old N42 and put on my late model E88 which has had a bit of improvement work done. Started bolting everything up and got to the cam timing sprocket. I tried pos 1 and the slot in the sprocket was way to the left of the mark on the camshaft locating plate.

I tried pos 2 and still not close, so I ended up with pos 3 and its still to the left. I know the engine has a few kms on it and it looks like the chain has reached its use by date. Will go out tomorrow and try and buy another. I might as well change it now whilst the engine is partially dismantled.

Are there any special tips, or things to watch out for, in replacing the timing chain, apart from making sure the crankshaft pulley nut is very tight?
