Dizzying dizzy question

Recommended Posts

I plan to put an electronic distributor into my '72 (I hate points) and was wondering which one would replace it properly...I've done the research and know I need a '79-83 dizzy for the best results but I didn't know if it mattered whether I got a manual or auto version (I assume so but I'd rather be sure...my 240 is a 3-sp auto by the way) with either version I've been told to only use the E12-80 module, which is pre-'81. So should I go with auto-auto (seems logical) or auto-manual combo?

I think the Auto / Manual distinction was only for the Point Dizzy's. The Automatics had the second set of points which were activated by the thermo switch connected to the transmission.

The electronic dizzies did not do that as far as I know.

Some one else chime in here.

The only thing I could think that would be different would possibly be the advance curve(different plates or springs inside perhaps)... I don't know for sure either...:ermm:

Enrique is right about the point dizzy's... don't think there would be much difference in the electronics, it ought to work.

I have one from a '79zx but I dont know weather it came from a manual or a auto. I am running an automatic and every thing has been great for the past 2 yrs . Much better performance and idle. I recently noticed some hesitation but only slight . I pulled the cap and found that the plate that rotates down inside that is part of the advance was broken and must be replaced. I have sence pulled the engine and am doing a restore so havent run the dist . again after the new parts. If you look inside and see small ball berrings about the size of ones for a bb gun and they are loose then the plastic holders have broken , this is fairly common . this disables the advance. Just a heads up . Gary
