Which Oil Pan Will Fit?

I have a 1970 240Z that I am putting a 280Z engine in (N42 block which should be from a '75-80 Z car).  I have heard that there were three different oil pans and some had fitment issues in some cars.  So my question is this...will the stock oil pan on the 280Z engine fit in my 240Z without issues?  Does anyone have pictures of the different pans and identify which is which?

The 280Z oil pan will fit fine in your 240Z.  The 280ZX pan is different but it also will fit in a 240Z or 280Z.  I think that fit problems happen if you try to put a 240Z/280Z pan in a 280ZX.

Your biggest problem with an L28 in your 240Z might be the exhaust manifold.  Not sure but  think that the 240Z collector is a bit small and restrictive.  Maybe not.  Anyway, it should be a piece of cake.

Ok, I have a different question and problem now.  I was installing the headers and the oil pan heat shield is in the way.  I found someone had mentioned having to remove it.  So I rolled up under the car with me socket to remove it only to find it is welded to the pan.  Is there an easy solution?  I'd rather not have to remove and replace the pan.  I do have others so I could, it's just a massive pain from what I understand (never done it on an engine in the car only on a stand).  Here's a picture if it helps.

Or a smaller version would be a dremel with the cut off wheel and pliers!

Won't you have more heat with the headers?  You'll be cooking that oil pan gasket.  I'm sure a lot of work went in to designing and implementing that odd little piece of metal.

Perhaps, perhaps not.  My headers have been JetHot coated so....

 

Heat or no, that part must go one way or another unfortunately.  ;(

Between my Rotozip and Dremel I was able to cut the heat shield off this morning.  This takes a while but can be done with the engine in the car from underneath.  Just be careful not to cut other things, like the oil pan itself.  🙂  I hit it with some paint and am just waiting for that to dry before returning to installing the headers.  Thank you all for the pointers!!

@texasz A local buddy of mine is having the same issue with a set of new headers he just bought. Out of curiosity, what headers are you using that caused you the interference with the shield?
