If you start at plain http zhome (http://zhome.com) the items in the left nav load correctly in the right frame.

If you start at https zhome (https://zhome.com) many of the items in the left nav don't load into the right frame.

This is because modern browsers don't allow a mixture of https and http resources in a page.

the easy and correct fix is to replace all the absolute http links with relative links, then the linked frame will load with the same protocol as the parent page.

Ah this worked. When Zedhead first brought this up I just goggled Zhome and did end up with the https site. I just now manually removed the s and the page works fine.

I went to edit this in my bookmark and found it was http and not https. So if i had tried this from my bookmark it would have not given my this issue of dead links.

That must be why it worked a few weeks ago as I normally get to the page through my bookmarks.

Good call.

aktar's page to sign up for the izcc appears to have moved to mlinks.net http://www.mlinks.net/~aktar/memberdb/entry/

Hi jonbill Thanks for the feedback and help. - - Since you found aktar and ask... LOL    "aktar" was Tony Fruzza. He was one of many volunteers that pitched in, devoted his time to help build and keep both the Z Car Home Page and the original "Z Car List" up and running. Since then he has long since moved on (who knows maybe he driving Porsche's now).  The Membership Sign up form and data base -as I recall - was a based on a Pearl Script, and as such it required an O/S that included or supported Pearl Scipts. So the form was hosted at mlinks. This was all in the late 80's early 90's and since the beginning both the Web Page and Email list - were moved from one O/S to another and another and another.  (IBM Main Frame, DEC/VAX, Univac, Unix, Mac OS-X..).

OK - back to the problem - - Interesting thing is - if you go to that Page (links) - and hit the hyper-link back to the ZHome.com sight - at least on my browser (Safari) everything works as it should - everything that is supposed to work -not previously deleted content.  That hyper link is "http://www.zhome.com/"

This is interesting - as of right now - If I open a new Browser Window - enter just ZHome.com - everything that is supposed to work seems to work.  Tried opening an additional Tab in a Browser that was already open and holding several Tabs... and everything on ZHome.com is now working for me. I have not updated nor changed anything.   Did all the same using www.ZHome.com and everything is now working.

Strange...

If I look up Home in google it comes up as the third entry, but has the HTTPS protocol as shown, clicking that will end up with the site that does not function correctly. At least for me.

Again if I pull it from my bookmark in Safari or from cache history it populates the HTTP protocol.

Strange...

When I try to join up I get the 403 error too, left click, right click, new window, my laptop, tablet, phone, desktop. I get a 403 error on another link too, the searchable membership list.

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access this resource.

I filled out the form and submitted to ad one of my Z cars to the registry, but it isn't there.

....(snipped  cjb).....The two links "How to join"  and "Searchable members list" both lead to "403 forbidden"

Not sure what is up but I hope this info will help you sort it out.

Hi Terrapin  @Racer X - thanks for the feedback and help.  The fact is "How to join"  and "Searchable members list" - - should no longer be on the Site. Thought I had eliminated the links... but obviously had not completely done the job. I'll work on that as I get time.

Just as a bit of background: We subscribers to "the Z Car List", an Email Based Z Car Discussion Group started in 1987 - started " the Internet Z Car Club" because at the time vendors offered discounts to Car Club Members. All you needed was a Club Name and your Club Membership Number. So we started a "virtual" club on the Internet. At the time we had somewhere around 12,000 subscribers. As all things Internet and Business evolved, competition for Customers drove most retail prices down and Club Membership Discounts became pretty much a thing of the past. If people shopped on-line they could usually find better prices everywhere. So the real reason and need for the Virtual Club evaporated. Secondly maintaining the Membership Data Base became more and more an issue - as it was usually based on vendor proprietary software - that was or was not supported by all the different Operating Systems on which the Web Site was hosted over the decades. Thirdly the number of volunteers with the software knowledge capable of supporting all this - became fewer and fewer. So today the Internet Z Car Club is truly virtual - it exist only in the minds of its members.   LOL

You've done a lot with it too, Carl.  how long have we known each other through the Z Car List?  I'd guess it was close to the beginning, because I know we exchanged notes on the listserv for a long time. 1987 was about the time I sold my 1976 280Z and bought the 1982 280ZX I had just before my current 1983 280 ZXT.  You've been the glue holding the whole thing together.  Mucho respect, my friend.

@Zed Head  I've been known to dabble in the information technologies. :Zap: But yeah do backend system engineering on a daily basis.

Anyway.......

I noticed that zhome.com was doing strange stuff on my phone a couple weeks back, i thought perhaps it was an issue with my phone.

Interestingly if you look at this snapshot taken earlier this year https://web.archive.org/web/20200220162457/https://www.zhome.com/ the site works pretty well, and the documents linked on the left side open on the right frame when you press on the link.

I have a hunch that the issue is with the hyperlinks that are present on the right side, some of the references are mismatched between http and https. I know that there has been a big push into moving the entire web over to HTTPS, to get rid of potential man-in-the-middle attacks (thx nsa). If you enable `developer mode` in your browser you can inspect parts of the webpage that you are visiting, on ZHome.com i was able to change the hyperlink for one of the pages on the left side, and when clicking it, it loads correctly!

Here is the link from the red-alerts you see at the bottom of the page. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Mixed_content

@Carl Beck i think you might have to start directing all traffic from http -> https by changing some of the configuration options within the webserver (or reverse-proxy if you use one). I think you might have to also update all the links from http -> https to allow the browsers to load in-content in a `secure` way. Doing so might get your website into a more friendly state 🙂

If you're looking for a service that can help you with the HTTPS, take a look at https://letsencrypt.org/
