mushupork5 Posted June 3, 2003 Share #14 Posted June 3, 2003 in texas there is a grandfather clause that says if your car is over 25 years old you only have to have a safety check for your inspection. They check the horn, lights, blinkers, wipers, and some other small stuff. It normally costs $12.50.

I know that a 25 year old car gets you out of smog testing in TX, but I didn't think they let anyone get out of the annual test (horns, lights, etc)
kmack Posted June 3, 2003 Share #16 Posted June 3, 2003 I have a FSM for the '71 and can make copies for you that can be faxed if necessary, but since you have your Chilton's manual that should work.Just out of curiosity, where are you taking the car to get inspected? Failed because "the HI/LO beam indicator was not working"? Sounds like one of those State run inspection boxes. Those guys will hit you for every little thing wrong with the car and then try their damndest to charge you an additional inspection fee. And yes they notice if any of the smog equip. has been removed. My advice, take the car a local mechanic shop (not a chain/franchise shop) and get them to inspect it. It will go much easier, trust me.Ps-Stay away from any shops located within a few miles radius of the DPS headquarters off Lamar St. DPS officers watch those shops like hawks. My uncle used to work at the Texaco across Lamar from the DPS HQ's. He said you see the officers on top of the bldg with binoculars watching them give inspections. texasz Posted June 3, 2003 Author Share #17 Posted June 3, 2003 The previous owner took it for the inspection. He took it to an Exxon station near Lamar and Braker somewhere. I did consider taking it somewhere else but will give them one more try since I now have the information needed about the cat converter. I bought the bulbs for the license plate this morning on my way to work and am hoping that it was only the bulbs. Then I will begin looking at the hi/low beam indicator. I may change my mind and take it somewhere else any how.
