Just got a 71 240z. I am thinking about getting another l24 engine and tranny to rebuild like i want while keeping the original in to drive for now.

If i get say a 73 engine and tranny will they directly bolt onto the 1971 car without any mods?

From all I've read on this forum I'll say yes. The short block for sure. You'll want the carbs and intake manifold of the '71 so all your linkage will stay the same. 

The only thing different on a '73 is the bumpers and those side draft carbs. I'm sure I'll be corrected which will give you the answers you're looking for.

Depending on the build date of the 71, it might have the A style transmission and center console. The 73 will have the B transmission and console. 

You may need to alter the shifter / shifter hole in the tunnel to make that work. The transmission mount will be different between A and B.

Not sure what an A style is but here is the center console it came with?

Long time ago i had a 72 and it had a different console...so i assume what i have now is an A style.

 

 

That is what I call a series 1 style console.  If you add a 5 speed you will have to make some changes to the metal in the trans tunnel and on the front edge of the shifter hole where the boot attaches the the console. Some people also add new bends to the shift lever. There a few threads here with photos of different ways to accomplish it. 

It really depends on your plans for the car.

If you plan on keeping it a stock original car by rebuilding the A transmission you would not want to cut the tunnel and mod it for a B transmission. (A on bottom B on top in pic. Longer tail housing, different shifter, different mount, different gearing)

If you plan on modding things anyway there would be no need to rebuild the A transmission, as the B or C style are a step up. Then you might also consider the 5 speed as 7tooZ says.

The 73 will have a B style 4 speed. (if still stock)

Post more pics of the rest of the car, check the drivers door jam for the build date.

The earlys can sell for good money.  Got any pictures?  Check your serial numbers, numbers-matching means much to many.

will try get some photos up in a few days. Mostly i want the car to stay original. Someone told me the tranny's on the later models were much better. The car drives but 

i want to rebuild everything with my son. So was thinking of buying another engine/tranny so we could rebuild and still enjoy the car until we are ready to switch. 

Thats the only reason i was wondering. I think now though i will just rebuild whats in the car and if it take a month or two with the car not running oh well.

First and foremost, welcome to the group. You won't find a more helpful or supporting bunch anywhere on the interweb. I recommend you go into your profile and add your VIN and build date to your signature area. This will be a big help to all of us when it comes to commenting on parts and processes - especially in your quest to keep the car stock wherever possible.

 

Then bent shifter route is actually pretty simple.  That would do it for you.  You just need a torch, or take it to a shop and have it done.  Here's an example.
