Something about that Z just doesn't sit well with me. I hope whoever bids on it had a chance to see it in person prior. The core support not being correct and additional braces up front that are present, but shouldn't be, indicates a pretty hard front end collision at some point in the Z's life. 

Seems obvious that it got crunched in the front, just by the pictures.  The seller is not the owner, it's a sales shop.  The guy has to know but he can claim he does not.  His "techs" did the work, not him.  Plausible deniability.

It got to $20,550 but RNM.

Does Nissan paint do this, even on a 71?  The roof should look the same.  It's been crunched and repaired.

 Definitely some odd stuff to think about.

The cracking is probably caused by bad paint formulation or the paint was applied too thick with not enough time between coats.  Given the overall quality of the repairs, it was fixed on the cheap and in a hurry.

So very important to remember, "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute".

Looks like a clean, honest Z that the current owner has had for more than 6 months. Nice to see figuring most auctions are from flippers who know almost nothing about the cars. 

 

I'm guessing mid $40K for this one based on other sales of excellent resto candidates and the fact that it's not a showroom example.

Judging strictly by looks at the chart BAT supplies (chart below filtered for last year of 1969-1972 240z's only) values may be coming down a bit off of their highs.  Of the last 11 69-72 cars, only one broke into the $30-40k territory - 7 were reserve not met.  Probably many factors in play (holidays, cars not as high a quality, etc.) but I think the values have receded a bit.  For an auction, It only take a two or more determined buyers though, so anything might happen.

I think you hit it right on the head. We’ve seen a surge of driver quality Zs hit the market. Timing and presentation are two vital parts in a successful auction, lately one or both being absent in many. I think that’s pretty clear with the ‘72 being listed right now bringing in strong money. Had it not been presented so professionally, I’d doubt a car with a cracked dash, non-original engine, and filthy underside would pull that kind of money.
