October 1, 20222 yr comment_646001 Another 72 on BAT. I have never seen a Z with a vinyl roof. Gotta say, it isn’t for me. Looks like crap.  The finish around the hatch and alongside the quarter panels is weird. The termination at the lower end of the windshield pillars is unfinished.  https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-datsun-240z-242/ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/64671-zs-on-bat-and-other-places-collection/?&page=153#findComment-646001 Share on other sites
October 2, 20222 yr comment_646003 I've not seen one before. It reminds of that saying "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should". It was an option in Japan, available here in the USA though the Datsun Parts Catalog / Dealer Parts Dept. Could have been installed at the Dealership, usually done by upholstery shops/convertible shops that specialized in Vinyl Tops for cars. Most of them were custom made and installed at the Top Shops.  Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/64671-zs-on-bat-and-other-places-collection/?&page=153#findComment-646021 Share on other sites
October 2, 20222 yr comment_646024 Nissan part No. D4160-00003 and superseded 00016. 'Leather-Top' (Black) Appears in the 1973 North American Parts Catalog, illustration 150, and I can't find it in the 1972 Fairlady Z Parts Catalog. It is listed with the '240Z' rocker stripe kits and the illustration shows installation tools and glue. It shows edge molding but the picture looks like a coil of string. It is not mentioned in my 1972 North American options catalog but I recall it from a Japanese option catalog? I saw one in a junk yard in Texas - out junking with Fred. Only one I have ever seen. October 3, 20222 yr comment_646043 I have only ever seen pix of these vinyl tops. I agree, they are not for me...and I've heard from many (not just in the Z community) that cars with these tend to have rust under the vinyl. Hi Chris, I checked my collection. Fairlady Z parts catalogs never listed the vinyl top. But there was a letter for all the dealerships nationwide which indicates the vinyl top . You can see the date was January 21st 1970 .  Datsun 240Z sports for US & CANADA , March 1970 parts catalog introduced the vinyl top that was for the first time shown in the parts catalog. Personally, I like it. But maybe for the second or third car , not for my best beloved car. Kats Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/64671-zs-on-bat-and-other-places-collection/?&page=153#findComment-646093 Share on other sites
October 5, 20222 yr comment_646094 When I had a vacation in Hawaii, I saw a blue car with white vinyl top in a wreck yard. That was almost 20 years ago. I believe many of you remember this 240ZG , this car is my favorite, super rare example. Maybe the original owner was a rich man, ZG with a factory A/C , Automatic transmission, and the vinyl top. The total payment was absolutely more than the price of Z432. Kats  Edited October 5, 20222 yr by kats Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/64671-zs-on-bat-and-other-places-collection/?&page=153#findComment-646094 Share on other sites
