They don't care whether they educate the public or not, it's all about the sale. I've seen dogs get sold for ridiculous amounts at auction due to the excitement and euphoria in the room. If they can find a buyer for what they are expecting it's worth then good luck to them., if not it will pop up elsewhere for sale. The armchair experts love to complain and point out why it shouldn't achieve reserve, at the end of the day no one really listens or even hears them and the car sells. The next owner may chose to have it restored correctly but that doesn't matter at the auction. The white 1969 240Z from the same collection https://www.mecum.com/lots/1088318/1969-datsun-240z/ also has a very high estimate, be interesting to see if it sells. 1969 Sold for $120,000. TV commentators barely discussed the rarity of this car as they had no idea. There were several '69 only parts missing from this car. August 19, 20231 yr comment_656097 Thanks @hiyabrad $120k seems a fair price for it considering the missing parts. Did it have the original engine? Call me old fashioned, but I still expect an auction to get what they put in writing right. What they hide, and what they don't know, is part of the game. Lies, not. 2 hours ago, SpeedRoo said: The armchair experts love to complain and point out why it shouldn't achieve reserve, at the end of the day no one really listens or even hears them and the car sells. @ "armchair experts". This thread is a veritable parking lot full of deep-buttoned silk velvet upholstered wingback armchairs. That's what we do. That's what classiczcars.com exists for. Who else is going to do it? The poorly-informed, portfolio-building-and-bailing-out-at-the-right-time-investors who bought something because their 'advisor' told them it was cool won't do it. They don't know sh*t from putty. What do you classify yourself as then, Tonto? As you said yourself in an earlier post: "Yes, that's just sales patter and they all do it," and "Indeed, I very much doubt that Mecum would bother. Their small print covers them in any case. I would guess that the owner/vendor is responsible for some of what is written about the car in the Mecum listings and their supporting media." @ "armchair experts". I doubt the auction houses and buyers read what is written here and really care. If they did nothing would ever go to auction. I like the Bring a Trailer format where the bidders can see the comments about each car and use it to make a decision on whether to bid or not, in a live auction like Mecum there is no such facility Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/64671-zs-on-bat-and-other-places-collection/?&page=190#findComment-656116 Share on other sites
