We have been working on getting the fuel tank back into the Goon. Noticed the filler neck is much smaller than the tank port

Over a 1/4" different in diameter and the filler neck is pretty hard. So I bought some exhaust swagers

I will expand them. Then heat. Then repeat. We'll see how that works

Worked on the Goon some today

First time outdoors in a while. It's filthy...

So the engine is in and I will start trying to help him get some of the misc pulled together. One of the big things is fabbing up an exhaust. I also need to try to figure out the float levels. I'm not sure if I can set them to the same height as standard SU's?

So we worked on Cody's car some. We got the header from Troy Ermish. He was more than willing to work with us on some fitment issues. The header touches the block near the outside edge of the bell housing. 

We spent some time with the die grinder and clearanced the block and bell housing.

It's pretty close to the floor. Hopefully the motor doesn't move that much in the mounts

Then I mixed up some blue to touch up where we had been grinding

The other issue is the parking brake cable. We need to pull it over to the side but there is too much slack. So we going to try to take 3" out of it

We'll see how that goes

So we marked the swaged end of the parking brake cable @ 3"s

Cut it off. Then we marked this end of the parking brake cable 3"s from the mounting flange

Cut it off

To get the end clean Cody heated it up some and pulled out the remnant

Then we bead blasted the end

I will try to plate it this weekend

A lot of this batch of plating came out really red. I'm not sure why

We worked on his header some today. We spotted the O2 bungs and Cody cut the holes in. I used a spare sensor to check the locations and ended up moving one of them to get a little more clearance. We bought the header uncoated so after he welds it, we will get it coated

We are getting closer to starting up the frankenstein motor.

Does anyone have any advice? Do we have to drive it? Can we just garage start it? How long do we need to run it on initial start up? Any other thoughts?

You can start it in the garage, try not to let it sit at idle for too long, vary the revs up and down but don't go over 3,000 until it is run in.  If you can keep it running for a good half hour until the engine has reached full temp. Those are just the rules I follow when starting a freshly rebuilt engine.
