Posted June 5, 200321 yr comment_39871 My spare tire well has some rust in it, no wholes (except for the manufacturer drain whole) just bad surface rust. Waht's the best way to get rid of it and treat the area?I was thinking taking a wire wheel on a drill to it to clean most of it up then something that would do a more fine finishing clean up. Then POR-15 the entire tire well (everything below the hatch floor). What are your oppinions? Here a pic of the area:http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=5626&password=&sort=7&thecat=500 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6491-rusty-spare-tire-well-repair/ Share on other sites
June 5, 200321 yr comment_39875 Use navel jelly to remove the rust, you can get it at any hardware store Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6491-rusty-spare-tire-well-repair/#findComment-39875 Share on other sites
June 5, 200321 yr comment_39890 POR-15 works very well! Stuff is as tuff as steel once it hardens. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6491-rusty-spare-tire-well-repair/#findComment-39890 Share on other sites

Just be careful - my spare tire well didn't look much worse than yours, but when I got down to it, I stuck a screwdriver through the rust in about 10 places. All little 1/4" rust-throughs, but from the bottom it looked fine. Until I poked. FYI. June 6, 200321 yr comment_40045 I just cut the good spare tire well out of my '73 in order to mount a fuel cell there. If you find you need it, you can have it. Make it soon though, 'cause I've been thinking about making a parts washer tank out of it.--John'73 240Z #73 FPIn San Antonio Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6491-rusty-spare-tire-well-repair/#findComment-40045 Share on other sites
