Putting in a replacement L-28

Gents ,sitting in the hotel bar in Aachen, Germany drinking beers alone,  the guy I’m flying with lives in Germany (we send pilots here for 4 hrs from US), so he’s at home with his family,
The COVID things is a big deal over here, where at home where I live it’s a almost a thing of the past.  Nobody wears masks where I live anymore and life is pretty much normal.  Not here, you have to show proof of vaccination everywhere you go and people wear mask outdoors alone.  They scan your phone as you enter a business.  I don’t have that phone QR code and get the stink eye when I show my old school CDC card.  To enter the Christmas market they scan and tag your wrists.
I don’t fly until tomorrow night.  So I’ve got time to burn now.  Anyway you all know about by fuel tank issue.   I called a company in Raleigh, NC about 2 hrs from where I live and they repair and fix fuel tanks.   They guy said it would be as good as new and they’d repair the leaking area where the hoses attach.  100% guaranteed he said.  I was on the fence about ordering a new tank but held off after I told my wife it was $825 shipped for a new tank on a car that she hates.  We have a $500 policy?  Any purchase over $500 requires us to get permission from the other,  She said…” how much have you spent of this car that sits there and leaks gas in the garage?”   $350 to do the fuel tank restoration!  That doesn’t need spouse approval so it the direction I’m going.

The tank repair guy probably uses something like Red-Kote.  But has the experience to get it right.  Should work.  Good luck.

You live out on the coast, right?  Must be that ocean air.

Stay away from those populated areas when you get back.  Cases and hospitalizations are heading back up.  The same cycle happens here in Washington.  We're freee!...it's back...we're freee!...it's back...

Yep, live on the coast.  I actually live on an outer bank island.  My city has a population of 3,700,  but it’s big vacation spot and ranked best beach in NC.   We’ve had a major major influx of people from NY, NJ, MD and CT to surrounding areas.  70% of home sales are from people from those areas.  Escaping covid and high state taxes I’m told by my neighbor who is the #1 realtor in the area.  It’s so bad locals have been priced out of the market.
My county has a population of 69,500 and we’ve had 89 deaths total from Covid and only 8,900 confirmed covid cases.  So people have their guard down for sure.

John, before you pull the trigger on your fuel tank, consider this place...  http://www.gas-tank.com/

Lifetime warranty, had a tank done last year, talked to them on the phone, they were very familiar with the 280 / 240 tanks.  They have many locations, I think I sent the one I had done to PA.   Worked out great for me.

Dave, he told me $395 is the standard rate unless it’s really bad.  Shipping is almost free for me so it works.  Spoke to the guy in Pittsburgh on the phone and he was very familiar with the Z tank and inspired confidence.  Said he’s gotten a lot of Z and RX tanks this year.  2 week turn around.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas. I got home from Europe on Christmas Eve. Painful 2 weeks over there, they extended me 3 days due to the excessive cargo needed to be moved.
I pulled my tank yesterday and boxed it up. How this isn’t another fail!!
