Identify the diff...

Recommended Posts

drunken master,

definately an R200 ( probably open center) it is one of the features of the AU version of the 260Z Coupe.

Z kid,

take the plunge. The R200 is worth the effort. If you can get your hands on an R200 for that price with a full size LSD inside, go for it.

I got mine back in 93, had it in storage because I wanted to rebuild it first. I was told simply don't fix it if it ain't broken. I changed the drive shaft seals LH & RH, the rear seal and flushed the internals. New circlips on the half shafts and still going hard now.

1. Yes its a R200, i would guess a 3.7 ratio, as all 260z's 2 seater and 2+2 came with 3.7s, unless you are lucky and got something special, easy way to check is to take the rear cover off and check what it says inside...

2. If you are looking for a 3.9 ratio R200, im hoping to see if i can get my car back next week, i had a perfect condition 3.9 R200 open diff that i'm willing to sell the whole rear end as its got new everthing in there... for pretty cheap as well

3. If i still had a early Z i would buy the long nose 4.3 LSD in a snap, i wouldn't care if it had lsd or not, as it being 4.3 i would love to have this ratio, would be killer on acceleration, just rev a little higher in 5th.. hehe

4. all said and done, i would convert the Z rear end to a S13 or R32 gtst rear end, you can pick up a whole rear casing for less than $500 no problem, and they are mostly all 4.1 LSD short nose R200, a bit of fab work to get it all in, shorting cv's, and a front diff mount, but wouldn't be to difficult with a bit of welding and a bit of fab work.. and that would be a killer rear end with aftermarket goodies availble, plus plenty of spare parts.. but up to you in what you do..

I will hold off until I find out what the 1600 is like at higher speeds, its fitted with the skyline 5 speed and a 4.1 ratio diff. If thats ok, I guess the 4.3 should only be another small step in the right direction for scary acceleration.ROFL
