240 vs. porsche...

Who out there has had any battles with a porsche and how was the outcome? The reason that I am asking this is, I am having the age-old argument with a bunch of buddies that a porsche will CONSTANTLY waste a Z. I personally have a problem with this since I have met and contested many Porsches.

I need to get some feedback on this, these guys are SOOOOOOO confident that we suk that I could use an airline barfbag.

Bring it on...

Uh, well.... depends on which model of Porsche they are talking about....

944 and a 240 are fairly equal as far as handling and power to weight. I raced against a few and it was a matter of driving that usually won out. 944 Turbo.. forget it...

911? Forget it.. 240 doesn't stand much of a chance against their power and brakes(unless you go back to an early 70's 911) and if the driver is good, they will outhandle a 240.. but it takes a perfect driver to outhandle a 240 in a 911.

924, no contest... Z wins, unless it's a 924 Turbo... then the Z has some competition, that one might come down to driver skill.....

914/6... about the same as the 944 non turbo...

914/4.. Z wins...

911 Turbo? What Z?:ermm:

I think your question is a bit vague. Are you talking about on the street or on the track in a race where cars of a similar class compete together? Are you talking about a stock 240Z against a stock 911 from the same year?

Let's put it this way:

Any Z ever made, even a 280ZX, will beat the original Porsche 356 from 1948 (1.1 liters, 40hp, top speed 85mph).

If you want to compare equal model years then it would be safe to say that a 2003 350Z (156mph) could probably take a 2003 Cayenne (150mph).

If you want to compare cars from the early to mid seventies I'm afraid to say that the Porsche 917/30 Can-Am set the world closed course speed record of 221mph in 1975 that held for over 10 years. It did of course weigh about 500 pounds less than a 240Z and have almost 1500hp.

People racing Z cars have certainly beat people racing Porsches. The 240Z can hold its own against a similarly equipped 911. The statment that a "Porsche will CONSTANTLY waste a Z" sounds like an adolescent statement similar to arguing about who's the better athlete. Let your buddies win the argument; they probably don't own Porsches anyhow.

I am talking about a spiced up 240 with a say N/A L28, N42 head, ported and polished, bored with I dunno, say triple michunis and 3.90 gearing...

And not top speed here, just say the zero to eighty....

Sorry to be so vague earlier, I was just trying to start the discussion...

Have a great Sunday, and HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!

early 928 porshes (4.7) arent as quick as a modded 240, with a quick L28/cam/ported/bored etc, same as non turbo 911's Pre 993 series, in a straight line. remember a 240 with a fast L28 is capable of high 13 second 1/4 mile times with twin SU's.

of course who knows what can happen when it comes to the crunch.

although i could also be full of crapLOL

Shoot, my little 240 w/L28, 5 speed, 3.90 diff. blew right past this twin turbo 911 the other day............Ok, OK guys, your saying that's pretty impressive for an old 240 but hey, the 911 was parked on the road side!!! Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!

Wasn't the 240 and the NA 911 both in C prod during the years where the 240 took the Championship? I believe so..

I'd say that consecutive championships are the "proof in the pudding", as it were.

BUT - there's more than one Porsche. I don't think the Z car and the 930 TT Carrera is any match.

Check out this link for a comparison (1.8 mile course):

http://www.rgvpca.org/event_results.htm

The latest event (May 24th) I was running street tires, MSA performance springs, stock-type strut cartridges, EBC Green pads, SS brake lines, Stock L24 (except for headers), urethane sway bars bushings, and about 1* of negative camber on the wheels. I'm in XC-3.

The 944 in P-2 is the same car, just different drivers. This car is NA, 400# springs, Koenig adjustables, camber plates, essentially stock motor, Hoosier slicks. The time difference btwn the 2 is driver experience.

But as you can see, a for the most part, stock 240 is not far off the pace from a race prepped 944. About 4 seconds. A little more work to my car, better tires, and an L28 and I'll have them beat for sure.

Just an actual comparison with hard numbers. Tell your Porsch buddies to beware of the cheap-looking, little Datsuns! They'll sneak up on you when you're not looking...
