L28 Timing chain

Don't have a notch in the mellings sprocket but I see what you are saying. The tight side has the tensioner right.

The tight side is the one that doesn't need the tensioner.

The crank pulls the chain down clockwise from the front so from the front of the car the tight side is the right or straight side.

It's off a little I think. The front pulley key slot should be straight up. Like this your mechanical timing would be retarded? or PC correct, "slow" coming in.

Edit: I just realized the motor is tilted pretty good so maybe it's right.

There are 42 pins between marks like the fsm states. It is what it is. All parts are new. I have not turned it  over but I wonder if the drivers side will tighten.

Everything seems pretty well installed, but it's just hard to tell if the cam is oriented correctly.  Weird that the aftermarket companies have removed all of the marks needed to ensure proper installation.  Is there a mark on the lower sprocket?  I looked at the images on Rockauto and couldn't tell.

They might be showing the backside.

There's probably a cam lobe at a certain point when things are right that you could use instead of the marks.  Just about to get on the ramp or straight up, or something.

Couple of issues with that video. Obviously an amateur with no L28 experience. Puts the upper chain sprocket on with the chain and then realizes he cant get it on. Thats  auto mechanics school 101. But any way is 13:12 he adjusts the upper cam to the mark and the chain still is slightly loose on the drivers\

side like mine. Then in 13:27 its mysteriously tight. If I turned my crank a bit it would be tight too. BUT.... the pulley would not be at TDC. 42 pins mark to mark and the sprockets are locked, I dont see how you could adjust anything.

The video had some tips and tricks.  Obviously, you are well past this step.

Don't forget to use good break-in oil on the first engine start.  The cam lobes are sensitive.

Is there an other way to tighten the cam shaft bolt to 100ft lb without holding the center of the camshaft. I really dont want to screw up the camshaft.

Pull the starter…..get someone to lock the flywheel by inserting a large screwdriver in a gear tooth and rotating till it rests against the engine block. Are you sure about 100 ft lbs? Sounds high. I think some manuals call for less.
