MH77280Z Posted March 14, 2022 Share #1 Posted March 14, 2022 I thought this was metal. Seems like this is plastic and getting very brittle where the old iron rusted screws were. I suppose this cannot go in the heating oven after powder coat? Do they sell reproductions of it?
Terrapin Z Posted March 14, 2022 Share #2 Posted March 14, 2022 240's were metal, 280 went to plastic. I would not recommend putting them in the oven. I am not sure about reproductions, I seem to remember a FB ad for some made of metal but shady looking outfit and expensive. They come up on eBay from time to time. S30Driver Posted March 15, 2022 Share #4 Posted March 15, 2022 I think I may have some in good condition. Let me check later today, and will report back.
Captain Obvious Posted March 15, 2022 Share #5 Posted March 15, 2022 Not that it matters (other than to satisfy my pedantic nature)... It wasn't just the 280's. The 260 also used plastic. If S30 doesn't turn anything up, I've got a spare pair here.
cgsheen1 Posted March 15, 2022 Share #6 Posted March 15, 2022 @CO Uh, you mean the 280Z's copied the same plastic taillight surrounds AS THE 260Z... All that great 280Z "innovation" started with the 260Z. 🤪
Captain Obvious Posted March 15, 2022 Share #7 Posted March 15, 2022 Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up!!
S30Driver Posted March 15, 2022 Share #8 Posted March 15, 2022 Found the pair of 280 housings. They are in pretty good shape, just need refinishing. No cracks, screw holes are good. One plastic boss at the reverse light area is damaged on one, repairable.
MH77280Z Posted March 22, 2022 Author Share #9 Posted March 22, 2022 So guys I decided to do some patch work on my panels. I used JB weld to strengthen plastic around holes etc and it is looking good. Need some opinion on the color 🙂 i found this pic on ebay on the list. My initial paint was all black but i didn't liked it. So i bought a Matt Grey from homedepot and it did not quite turned out to be the color in ebay product. I think it is kind of a smoky grey color. I am planning to try smoky grey kind of thing ... Appreciate if someone know a closer match I can find at a local store?
siteunseen Posted March 22, 2022 Share #10 Posted March 22, 2022 Here's the best one to me. I used it and it looks great. Post #11 from @CanTechZ I'm not sure if it's the same for 280s though. Maybe someone will tell us?
psdenno Posted March 23, 2022 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2022 Just did my '71 tail light panels in December - although not sure if it's the same color shade used on the 280s. Sanded the panels, sprayed Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Flat Gray Primer, wet sanded, sprayed Dupli-Color Perfect Match BFM0360 Dark Shadow Gray (CX) replaces T299, let sit for a day and then sprayed with Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Matte Clear. I'm pleased with the results in terms of color and texture.
