Posted June 18, 200321 yr comment_41203 i step on the accelerator sometimes and then my car barely moves and the exhaust makes a really bad sputtering sound. then all of a sudden it sometimes just kicks in and goes.i recently just had my carbs adjusted and balanced so i'm wondering if it's rust or stuff from my fuel tank that's plugging my carbs up.this problem comes and goes often enough to annoy me.anyone know what i'm talking about? June 18, 200321 yr comment_41279 A couple of places you might check out are the centrifical advance in your distributor, assuming the valves are adjusted and the idle timing is correct, and also your fuel pump delivery. If either the distributor or fuel pump are near shot, they can provide intermitent operation. Just some ideas to investigate! Tell us what you find. June 25, 200321 yr comment_42025 This may not be your problem, but then again it might. If the carbs are set too lean, you will get a stumble when you open the throttle quickly. The method I use to set the mixture is to take the air cleaner off and using a small screw driver I lift up the dash pot in one carb, or the other about 1/4". The RPM's should rise quickly then fall off. Generally, if they fall off right away it's too lean, if they rise quickly, but drop down slowly, they're too rich. Make sure both carbs have the same sort of rise and fall time. Hope that helps. :classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6676-carb-problems/#findComment-42025 Share on other sites
