Posted May 24, 20222 yr comment_640793 I am restoring a 72 240 and I want to rebuild the steering rack.. Boots are torn, grease and gunk all over it, play, etc. I noticed I can get a rebuilt rack from a big box store for about $550. Seal kit plus tie rods looks to be around 450 to 500 and I would have to rebuild it. Wondering if anyone has had any experience with a Cardone rebuilt rack? I would check it to make sure it is the same ratio. Thanks. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/67510-72-steering-rack-rebuild/ Share on other sites
May 25, 20222 yr comment_640846 Search “Panchos Garage” on YouTube. You will find a video on rebuilding the rack. I was not under the impression he spent that kind of money. May 25, 20222 yr Author comment_640847 Thanks, I found the video. I will price check the parts, the inner tie rods were pretty pricey. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/67510-72-steering-rack-rebuild/#findComment-640847 Share on other sites
May 25, 20222 yr comment_640849 Grab them while you can. These parts aren’t going to be available forever. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/67510-72-steering-rack-rebuild/#findComment-640849 Share on other sites
May 31, 20222 yr Author comment_641067 FWIW, I just found a closeout on Rock auto. Moog (made in Japan) inner tie rods for $13 each with boots! I also got two sets of outer tie rod ends, as I am pretty certain that the inners will have the same threads on both sides. Looks like I am going to rebuild route. I don't see any inner tie rod ends listed at all. You have a part number?
